Batteries are great at delivering power in short bursts, but they are not good at storing energy. Batteries simply can’t carry enough energy to give electric aircraft the range and endurance they need to meet FAA and EASA reserve requirements. Hybrid powerplants enable aircraft designers to design new aircraft that are electric-powered while using liquid fuel as the primary energy source to provide the range and endurance needed to meet the energy reserve regulations. Pound-for-pound, liquid fuel carries roughly 26 times the energy of the best battery packs available.

The Batteries and Motors That Could Help Electric Planes Take Off The arrival of electric planes that can carry hundreds of people thousands of miles hinges on developing a new generation of batteries, motors and other #technologies beyond what's powering today's electric cars. The Department of Energy (DOE) this week announced that 12 teams will receive a total of $15 million through Cheeseman's program to try to develop #batteries and energy storage systems with about four times as much energy density as current technologies. The goal is to electrify a plane that could carry up to 100 people for 1,000 miles. For power, electric #aircraft need motors that convert electricity — possibly generated by batteries and fuel cells, though there are hybrid scenarios as well — into mechanical work for propulsion. Toshiba and Airbus are focusing on superconducting motors that can generate megawatts of power to propel jets. Superconducting materials have no resistance, minimal heat loss and can carry more current, meaning less material — and less weight. #Superconducting materials hold the promise of being very efficient, very lightweight, power-dense. Existing superconducting materials have to be cooled to extremely low temperatures. One possible design uses the energy generated from vaporizing liquid hydrogen into fuel to cool the superconductor. There are also a variety of non-superconducting machines in development, plus hybrid #turboelectric planes that use gas turbines to drive electric motors.

ATR Reveals Hybrid-Electric Propulsion for EVO Aircraft, Battery Power Insufficient for All-Electric, #Hydrogen Still a Long-Term Option ATR has revealed new details about its EVO family, slated for entry into service by 2030, focusing on hybrid propulsion systems. Initially introduced in 2022, the EVO aims for a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and lower maintenance costs compared to the ATR 42/72 series, while being capable of running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Following several rounds of studies, a “mildly hybridized” system combining electric motors with a thermal engine has emerged as the most feasible option, according to Daniel Cuchet, ATR’s SVP of Engineering. Cuchet shared this at the 2024 International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, emphasizing that the current technology limitations make fully battery-electric propulsion for the required 2 MW per motor impractical. However, hybrid hydrogen propulsion remains a longer-term option. The preliminary architecture involves battery packs providing 300-500 kW, supplementing the turboprop engines with a 10-20% power split depending on the flight phase. This would reduce emissions by 20% while maintaining the ATR 72-600’s 72-passenger capacity. A hybrid hydrogen option, though reducing the capacity to fewer than 60 passengers, could lower per-passenger emissions by 40%. The hybrid-electric system would be capable of matching the current aircraft’s 72-passenger load and optimum 200 nm range, while still delivering 20% lower CO2 emissions. A hybrid hydrogen system would likely see passenger capacity reduced to fewer than 60 but would see emissions per passenger cut by 40%.

The preliminary parallel hybrid architecture is outlined with two battery packs providing a combined 300-500 kW, equal to a 10-20% power split with the thermal engines, depending on the mission phase. The packs will power electric motors mechanically linked to the propeller gearboxes. “That’s what we are discussing depending on mission phase,” says Daniel Cuchet noting, “the integration and modification of that is quite a challenge.”

Electric power will be used to supplement the turboprop engine for takeoff in hot and high conditions and climb, providing around 10% of the overall power. In normal operations, ATR envisions electrical energy providing up to 20% of the power for the top-of-climb segment and initial cruise, with recharging from the thermal engines potentially occurring later in the cruise and during descent, as well as on the ground between flights. CATL battery successfully powers electric plane with 1,800-mile! ✅ CATL successfully tested a 4-ton electric plane powered by its ultra-high energy density battery. ➡️ By 2028, CATL expects to reveal an 8-ton civil electric aircraft with around 1,200 to 1,800 miles (2,000 to 3,000 km) range. 🔋 With up to 500 Wh/kg energy density in a single cell, twice that of the average EV. ✈️ CATL said it’s “opening up a brand-new electrification scenario of passenger aircraft.” CATL has been working with partners like Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) to develop the electric plane. The company successfully completed a 4-ton electric aircraft test flight as work on longer-range models is advancing. CATL announced last Tuesday that it expects to introduce an 8-ton commercial electric aircraft in 2027 or 2028 with a standardized range of around 1,200 to 1,800 miles (2,000 to 3,000 km).
