Here are 5 key traits we're using to revitalise high streets and town centres for a sustainable future.

Transforming bustling streets into vibrant community spaces requires innovative design solutions. Isett’s Landscape Architecture Department took on the redesign of major roadways within two boroughs with equal but unique challenges. 1️⃣ Main Street Makeover in Macungie: A streetscape plan for the borough’s Main Street has been a long-time priority for the Borough. Navigating the daily vehicular traffic of State Route 100 (Main Street), posed safety and accessibility challenges for pedestrians. The Isett Team devised a comprehensive redesign, introducing stormwater bump out, ornamental LED lighting and ADA ramp. The result is reduced crossing times, enhanced stormwater quality, and a more inviting downtown for businesses and residents alike. 2️⃣ Enhancing Walkability in Hellertown: With Hellertown’s diverse downtown business mix, its newly invigorated parks, and the ever-increasing popularity of the Saucon Rail Trail (SRT), people wanted to explore the community more by foot and bike. One obstacle to walkability remained: the Borough’s Main Street also happens to be State Route (SR) 412, a popular local highway which sees 13,000 to 20,000 vehicles a day. Isett’s Walkability and Smart Transportation Plan revolutionized the area, introducing rapid flasher lights, decorative crosswalks, and ADA ramps. 🎙 Let's talk about mid-rise apartments (3-6 storeys). They can be a good way to increase housing in established areas, if they are designed to respond to the existing scale and character of their context. 🏘 This excellent example does just that. The Union on Terry St Rozelle, on Terry St Rozelle by Turner, SJB and Aspect, is a masterplanned site where 6 storey buildings transition to 4 storeys at the interface with surrounding development. The fourth storey is further set within the roof form so it presents as a 3 storey building, which helps the development match the scale of Terry St and sit comfortably within its context. At the same time, the detailed apartment design creates opportunities for residents to overlook the street, creating a sense of safety and encouraging interactions with neighbours. Consolidated driveway access increases space for tree planting and landscaping which, over time, will create shade for passers-by and provide screening and privacy for residents. 🌳 🎤 What do you think? Wynwood has blossomed from a neglected industrial area into America’s most vibrant neighborhood, seamlessly integrating repurposed warehouses with lively new developments. The district’s curated graffiti murals and artistic designs have made it a cultural epicenter. This transformation is a testament to thoughtful planning guidelines established by Wynwood’s property owners and Miami city planners a decade ago. These rules prioritize a dense yet human-scale environment, distinguishing Wynwood from Miami’s towering urban landscapes. The tower plan, by Bazbaz Development, calls for 544 apartments and even more cars and parking, or 621 spots, at North Miami Avenue and Northwest 21st Street. That would effectively bring a downtown Miami density to narrow Wynwood streets already nearly overwhelmed with traffic and infrastructure that has barely kept up with the current wave of redevelopment. The name Treehouse derives from the concept’s key feature: a double-height common area located four stories above ground level; a new typology to affordable senior living that transforms the stereotypes associated with typical retirement homes. Accessible by elevators, but intended primarily by a set of open stairs, this mid building two storey community place offers a constant connection to the outside world though aerial views and tree canopy sightlines, providing residents with an ongoing relationship with the changing seasons, weather patterns and time of day.   Typically, multi-unit housing locates common areas, such as dining rooms and shared kitchens, on the ground level, with residential units above. Several benefits emerge when these gathering spaces are placed higher up, where windows offer greater visual prospect and sensory stimulation, derived from aerial views, is especially important for those who may have mobility issues and can’t easily venture outdoors. When The Hankin Group developed a high-density mixed-use town center, CVDA was requested to review a plan to enhance placemaking, walkability, and create a landscape character that is in keeping with the Chester County cultural landscape. During the process CVDA revisited the street design system, all walkways, the community center/pool area and developed the trails and related site circulation. The enhanced plan included pedestrian friendly streetscapes that will serve both residents and businesses, more aesthetic parking facilities, and a network of parks and open space enhancing the neighborhood experience. Challenges included meeting ADA requirements given the slopes of the site, developing landscape enhancements that did not interfere with utilities, re-grading the site to meet the challenging cut and fill requirements, and incorporating traffic calming initiatives that provided enhanced value to the overall design of the project. #placemaking #towncenter #trafficcalming #culturallandscape #mixeduse
