Time to meet another one of our fantastic students, Varisara Laosuksri, who shares a little about what it's like being a student at UNSW school of Chemical Engineering. 1. Which area of Chemical Engineering interests you the most and what drew you to this field of study initially? Water! My interest in the water industry began with an elective I studied during my exchange. I was fascinated by different water treatment technologies. Since then, the more exposure I have had to the water industry through internships and conferences, the more passionate I have become about the field 2. What do you consider the key benefits of studying Chemical Engineering at UNSW? There are many benefits to studying Chemical Engineering at UNSW. The teachers are supportive, and the relatively small cohort makes it easier to develop a strong network of friends. There are also many extracurricular activities on offer. Throughout my degree, I have been a part of the Cellular Agriculture Vertically Integrated Project, looking into cell-cultured meat as a sustainable meat alternative. I have had the opportunity to go on exchange to UBC in Vancouver, Canada, and gained diverse industry experiences through the UNSW Co-op program. These experiences have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. 3. What are your career aspirations and goals after completing your studies? Currently, I want to continue working in the water/essential services industry. I find it to be an extremely rewarding career as it allows me to contribute positively to both the community and the environment. After graduating this year, I would like to work as a process engineer and gain experience at different water treatment facilities, from biological wastewater treatment to drinking water purification and desalination. Eventually, I want to venture into engineering design work and project commissioning. I’m happy to share that I’ve been awarded my Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, and I’m happy to be accomplishing such a goal at an early age of my career. I’ve come along way from whether I want to do engineering or not, and now I’m diving deep. I’m grateful for all the helpful guidance and advice I’ve received from the Faculty of Engineering at Sohar University, especially my advisor Dr Mohsin Qureshi. Besides academic achievements, I have been focused during the past two years on improving my productivity and performance, and I’ve came across a lot of useful insights. The deep work skill which I came across in the book Deep Work by Cal Newport has changed my way of doing things. In a world full of distractions it has become hard to work and study in a focused manner leading to produce high quality work. A four hour of deep work can be more valuable and productive than an eight hour of shallow work. However, with the social media and smartphones depleting our attention span its not an easy skill to equip. But everything is possible with ones well-power. And that lead me to trying to improve my habits and building them. I’ve learned valuable information from Atomic habits by James Clear, but the most valuable thing I’ve learned so far is not to rely on motivation, but on drive instead. Its hard to stay always motivated, nor its something that can be controlled or consistent. However, knowing your reasons and why you need to accomplish such things makes you become driven and push way further in consistency. There was more to learn and a lot of change happened in a span of two years. Earning a degree did not change me but my investment in improving myself. There’s more to come and my learning journey shall never stop.

Another Saturday night of text books (and compulsory glass of wine!) Not going to lie, studying as a single parent and working full time is a juggle, but through the support of The Open University and being able to study at my own pace I am almost on the final stretch of my engineering degree. Studying this way has also given me the opportunity to work in the field and gain valuable knowledge along the way so when I graduate I will also have 6 years of engineering experience. But for now here's to another assignment, another glass of wine and plenty of chocolate bourbons. #openuniversity #engineering #studying #ou #coastalengineering

Here is the day 4 of sharing my application experiences 🥰🎉 I say a huge welcome to you and happy that you've been here since day 1 🤗 So, let's talk about #4 Perseverance and Extra mile 😲 One of the things that pushed me to go the extra mile in my last application was a scholar I met at EducationUSA who applied in the previous cycle (2023). This scholar was a Chemical Engineer like myself and I had to reach out to him after he gave his testimony. What he shared with me was the game changer 😱. I immediately saw why he got his offers and why I couldn't 🥲. It was an Excel template that contained all the details of his application arranged in columns and rows. I took that and followed his approach and here we are today 🤩 The template was not all but I had to do my own research, looking up various universities in the US, my program of choice, my chances of getting offers, different tests and minimum scores required, reaching out to GCs for clarification, attending open houses and many more 😄. It was a lot of work! In sum, you must be ready to give all your applications the very best shots. I did about 18 applications with SOPs carefully targeted towards the various researches done in the programs. Indeed it was demanding but it paid off 💪 Don't wait to apply! Apply adhering strictly to instructions, going the extra mile, partnering with mentors and friends and you will surely pull through! LACUNAE TO BE BRIDGED: In engineering studies, most important is the project work, which to my experiences is taken very lightly by majority of institutions. Project work is dealt like other subjects which is assigned to just one teacher. This teacher identity one or two projects to be done by whole class. This is particularly so in conventional disciplines. Three to four students, who have initiative do the project and rest just get a copy of the same. This practice doesn't lead anywhere. What required is a brain storming session between discipline specific faculty and students to identify the project to be executed by a group of 4 to 5 students in each group. Live projects from industry are the best options. If meaningful projects are executed, it will enhance the employability of students. May kindly consider.
