Stormwater in our rivers – it's a topic that's been in the news a lot this year, and for good reason. This is a major environmental concern and not something any of us wants to see. At PBJ Engineering Services, our work with water companies gives us a front-row seat to the industry's efforts in tackling these environmental challenges. We're all about supporting improvements in our wastewater infrastructure. And there's been some positive news on this front. In the last week, Southern Water has announced the installation of a new £1 million storm tank at Edenbridge Wastewater Treatment Works in Kent. This vast structure allows more stormwater to be held at the site instead of releasing it into the environment. This development benefits nearby rivers such as the Eden and the Medway. And with Southern Water committing £1.5 billion to clean our waterways, hopefully, it's the sort of thing we'll see much more of in the coming months. #WastewaterTreatment #WaterPollution

Take a look at the article below on the impacts of stormwater ponds beyond stormwater management. A recent report out of Florida looked at the levels of carbon dioxide and methane produced by the ponds, compared to the carbon they are sequestering. Interestingly, newer and less maintained ponds are producing more carbon then they absorb. The article highlights numerous reasons ponds perform at different levels. In the end, the article also took a look at the impacts of algae growth in these water bodies too. Is this a story of inadequate initial vegetation, improper construction/design, nutrient loading implications, or just the continued lack of infrastructure maintenance? Have you ever wondered how England manages its wastewater and sewage? The answer lies beneath the ground! England has a combined sewer system. This means wastewater (including sewage) and storm waters flow into the same underground pipe system before travelling to a sewage treatment works. However, if the sewage system becomes overloaded (due to heavy rainfall), sewage overflows are permitted by the Environment Agency to discharge untreated sewage and wastewater into the environment. These act as emergency relief valves to stop sewage from flooding homes and businesses. This design is an integral component of England's urban infrastructure. The County of Hawai‘i is taking significant steps to rehabilitate its aging wastewater infrastructure. Thanks to a collaborative effort with the U.S. EPA and the Hawai‘i Department of Health, plans are underway to address critical maintenance and ensure compliance with the Clean Water Act. When dealing with deep excavations, it’s important to conduct a thorough assessment of the underlying soil. That was the case for a recent construction project in Brooklyn, where we started working with the client’s environmental consultant a year prior to breaking ground. After discovering some sections of soil contained hazardous levels of lead and chlorinated solvents, we developed a comprehensive disposal plan, transferring 325 tons of hazardous waste to a facility for treatment and landfill. Additionally, 20,000 tons of non-hazardous historic fill were transported to a licensed soil transfer facility for final disposition. By securing approvals at two licensed disposal facilities, we were able to move large volumes of soil as efficiently as possible, allowing construction activities to commence at the site promptly.
