Exciting news! The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is thrilled to announce that we received a $200 million grant from the EPA to advance nature-based solutions and reduce carbon emissions across Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia!   This funding is part of a huge $421 million grant from the EPA, made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 — the largest ever for natural climate solutions!   This grant will enable TNC to significantly expand its efforts, improving forest management over 67,650 acres in the Appalachians, restoring 33,000 acres of peatlands, protecting 10,500 acres of land, and restoring 150 acres of tidal wetlands – helping us to reduce wildfire and flood risks and to achieve our 2030 goals for nature and the environment. Conway, SC has received $2m to fund the development of nearly 4m cubic feet of stormwater storage within the McKeithan Watershed. In addition to stormwater management, this project will create habitats and offer recreational facilities that allow residents to engage with nature and benefit from the outdoor space. Florida has implemented significant changes to its stormwater regulations, moving away from old presumptive practices and adopting more rigorous standards to protect our water resources. Here’s a snapshot of what’s new: 🔍 Detailed Modeling & Calculations: Previous assumptions about BMPs achieving 80% pollutant reduction are replaced with requirements for precise modeling and calculations. This ensures more accurate and effective stormwater management. 🌿 Stricter Nutrient Reduction Targets: Treatment designs must achieve an 80% reduction in both TP and TN. This is crucial for preventing nutrient pollution in our water bodies. 🌊 Special Provisions for Sensitive Waters: For discharges into Outstanding Florida Waters, a 95% nutrient reduction is mandated. Additional requirements also apply for projects affecting impaired waters, further safeguarding these critical ecosystems. 🏗️ Flexible Standards for Redevelopment: Redevelopment projects now have a reduced TN performance standard of 45% under specific conditions. This encourages revitalization in areas with little or no historical stormwater treatment infrastructure.
