I went to an interesting talk yesterday, Build, Build, Build!, part of London Build Expo Build listening to experts in the housing sector talk about how we can meet the ambitious targets set by the new The Labour Party government. Discussing that more money but more people are needed in our planning department to increase the number of homes being built. I think it is important to get the right type of people in the departments who can be proactive in development but ensure social, environmental, and heritage protections are in place. Not long ago we discussed a similar topic in one of our Project 500 articles which highlights the benefits of increasing government funding for local council planning departments. It is clear that the government doesn’t have the capacity to built all of the homes themselves through public money, therefore, the private sector needs to be encouraged to do more which can only be possible with a pro-development well funded planning departments. https://lnkd.in/di8h_HUj In our article, we showed the large impact £1 billion would have across the country in planning departments over 5 years. Now the government has allocated £6 billion to affordable housing would this not be a more productive use of the money rather than building homes directly with this money? It would be great to hear your views on this topic/policy? Robbie Erbmann Kate Webb Deborah Heenan Anna Sinnott Julia Krause Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Planning Portal
