As a digital designer, I've always been drawn to what I like to call 'tamed chaos' in visual aesthetics. For the last decade, we've ventured far into the realm where minimalism equates to blandness, but the tide seems to be turning, and I couldn't be more excited for it! MINIMALISM: WHAT IS IT & WHY DOES IT MATTER. Minimalism has wide applications – from architecture, graphic design, arts, and fashion, to product designs, theatre, automobiles etc. What is minimalism? It is a “design movement” used in architecture, graphic designs, interior decorations, fashion, arts, technology, product design etc. to emphasize function and eliminate clutter. It involves expressing only the most essential elements of a product or subject by eliminating excessive and unnecessary components and features. It is a reaction to earlier forms of design. It involves stripping a design to its barest, its core, thereby using neutral colours, limited materials, and basic forms and avoiding undue ornamentation. It is a counterintuitive way of achieving pure elegance.   The History of Minimalist Design Minimalism emerged in the 20th century as a reaction to or alternative to the highly ornamented designs of the past. Some design historians attributed it to the Dutch De Stijl movement of 1913 to the early 1930s. The movement was supposedly influenced by the Japanese’s zen simplicity and the clean aesthetics of the Scandinavian design. The German architect, Mies Van Der Rohe was credited with the mantra, “Less is More”. In post-war Europe and the US, Mies and other notable architects combined the availability of new materials such as glass, steel and concrete and building processes influenced by mass production to create building designs that looked fresh and elegant. Mies and his contemporaries were largely associated with Bauhaus and modernism. Bauhaus was a German movement that aimed to create a new form of architecture after World War 1. Minimalist fashion, graphic design, and arts theatre emerged in the 1960s. Minimalist product designs began in the middle of the 20th century, laying the foundation for the production of everyday products such as desktop radio, which later culminated in the creation of the iPhone and driverless car. Design intrigues me because it's centred around problem-solving, while art stirs my curiosity, urging me to delve deeper. This quote perfectly encapsulates my approach to work. I strive to marry practicality with creativity in my designs, addressing immediate concerns while also evoking emotions and thoughts about the space. Maeda's concept serves as a reminder that design and art, despite their apparent disparities, are intricately linked. Design confronts real-world challenges, while art encourages contemplation of life's complexities. When combined, they form a captivating fusion of creativity that fuels innovation and enriches our experiences. By acknowledging the distinct contributions of each, we gain a deeper understanding of how creativity not only facilitates problem-solving but also fosters profound reflection.

Generally, styling is viewed as an act of making a space look perfect, sometimes even highly aspirational. While the creative license to decide the intent lies with the designer in charge, we believe styling adds a layer of personalization and warmth to the space. It involves creating something unique and purposeful that serves a defined objective. Designers leverage their mental processes to manage and refine ideas into tangible outcomes. Unlike decoration, which involves visual selection, design is about generating original concepts. It is distinguished from art by its emphasis on functionality; a well-designed product or space should be both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Designers focus on understanding their objectives clearly and presenting their creations effectively to their intended audience, whether through services or physical objects.
