PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center (Vancouver, WA): Did you know PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center has an animal feed program? Food scraps from the hospital become dinner for a passel of pigs. Caregiver Brent Cheney, RN, picks up food scraps from Southwest for his Mangalitsa pig breeding program at his family farm, Heirloom Family Micro Farm. PeaceHealth has been feeding these pigs for more than three years! “Our sustainability work is an important component of PeaceHealth’s value of stewardship, which includes a commitment to reducing our impact on the environment while supporting community health,” said Brian Nelson, PeaceHealth director of environmental stewardship, who oversees the program. “We take something that is considered ‘garbage’ bound for the landfill and turn it into a valuable product,” Cheney added.
