Over the last ten years, outdoor recreation has grown into one of the most powerful forces in conservation. Outdoor recreationists are deeply connected to the places they love, and that connection fuels our conservation efforts. This passion has empowered a new generation of advocates to get civically engaged and to move the needle on conservation efforts. This week, Outdoor Alliance is releasing a short film and special ten-year anniversary annual report. It explores not just some of the biggest wins of the last decade, but how we got there. With so much at stake in the coming years, from climate change to growing demand for green space, we are just getting started. Did you see it? Our quarterly policy newsletter is out, and just like the snow report, it is a flurry… The House has been steadily making headway on a package of recreation policy that would improve and expand access to outdoor recreation on public lands. The Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act will compliment America’s Outdoor Recreation (AORA) Act, which includes a number of recreation bills that Outdoor Alliance and our partners worked to develop. On the administrative front, we’re continuing to engage on BLM’s public lands rule, oil and gas regulations, and the Forest Service’s climate resilience efforts. Last week, the Forest Service and National Park Service released guidance on climbing management that would restrict the use of fixed anchors in Wilderness areas. We’ll be working with our partners to address this issue, making sure that climbers, and the outdoor recreation community can retain safe and sustainable access to America’s public lands. https://lnkd.in/gfnckJhG

The Izaak Walton League of America was created as an environmental conservation organization in 1922. It was well ahead of its time. IWLA was formed by a group of outdoorspeople, fishers and hunters. A century ago, they noticed as their precious places, water and land were becoming ruined by raw sewage, industrial run-off, and rapid development. They formed the League to defend America's water quality and to push for the preservation of healthy land for use by all. Over the years, the mission of IWLA has expanded. Today, the preservation of healthy agricultural land, improved air quality, and greenhouse gas reduction have been added to the mission. A new report has revealed that the network of internationally important open spaces we manage – including Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath – are worth £282.6 million each year in benefits to society. The report also found that the overall benefit-to-cost ratio is 16.4 – meaning that every £1 spent on maintaining and protecting these open spaces delivers £16.40 in ‘natural capital benefits’ for the public. We are proud to protect over 11,000 acres of parks, forests, heaths, gardens and historic open spaces across London and southeast England, including a wide variety of critically important wildlife habitats, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Special Areas of Conservation, and National Nature Reserves. In total, they attract over 47 million visitors annually – over three times the number who go to Premier League football matches every season, and almost eight times the number of annual visitors to the Grand Canyon.
