During the summers of 2010 and 2011, I spent 14 weeks crafting some of the most enjoyable and fulfilling content I've ever had the pleasure of working on. MTV Summer Wraps with Lenay Dunn. This was interstitial content with some branded marketing thrown in for clients like Fanta, BlackBerry, Free Credit Report and more. This work felt like an extension of myself, embodying my personality as a curious explorer and spontaneous human. I see "shooting" potential in almost everything around me. The world to me is truly a canvas. My approach as director and producer was spontaneous and free-flowing. We didn't stick to rigid scripts; instead, we embraced spontaneity, capturing any fun or endearing moments that came our way. I made our amazing host do wraps from roller coasters, jetski's, shark tanks, underwater, buried in the sand. These impromptu captures often resulted in our most exceptional content. It also helped that Lenay was one of the best talents I have ever worked with. My responsibilities included conceptualizing the series of wraps "The Ultimate Summer Vacation" and scouting locations, directing talent, and writing/producing approximately 40 segments each week for 14 weeks, shooting then all in 1 day per week. You do the math, it was a lot! And here's the kicker—I managed all this while eight months pregnant in the dead of summer, adding an extra layer of adventure and determination to the mix. I actually was giving edit notes from the delivery room (since going into labor a month early!) When I say I LIVE for this stuff, I really do. Give me any product, challenge, seed of an idea and I will give you the best content I can. While many people in the industry lament the death of the Idea, rise of clients who 'want a movement or viral videos', woke culture and every darn thing pandering to Gen MZs etc, I love advertising. It's still a rush after 30 years. My first big agency was Denstu, Young & Rubicam (DYR). I started on Valentine's Day 1994, hired by Patrick Low (who just celebrated his birthday - Happy Belated Birthday Patrick Low) and Mark Fong. Unlike other MNCs that were padded with foreign talents, the DYR creative department was made up of locals with two token Americans. Never knowing my place, I used to bug Pat about hiring hot shot creatives of that day. People like Mark Ringer, Scott Lambert, Jonathan Biggins, Kurt Detweiler but Pat would always brush me aside like a father does a pesky child. He would say, 'better a team player than someone who is immensely talented'. I never really got that, often wondering if Pat envisioned a likely mutiny. Today, if I have to choose between a creative oozing ideas out of his/her ear vs someone who is a team player or willing to be one, it's a no brainer. Especially given the state of our local ad scene. The Singapore Ad industry has not invested in the future and does not have a steady pipeline of eager-beaver talents from our ad schools/courses. Instead we have many pretenders, those who consider their OOTD+socials+amateur photography as 'creative folio'. (Don't get me started on the 'writers'.) Of course, we want to unearth the next weirdly wonderful creative whiz or that fiercely independent thinker. It's a mini Holy Grail in itself. But the bigger prize is in building a championship-worthy team or one that can contend consistently. Phil Jackson who coached Michael Jordan said, "The strength of each member is the team." 🎥 Have you ever been faced with a last-minute project that turned out surprisingly well? 😲💼 💡 Picture this: I received a call from a GEN Agency influencer who had an incredible opportunity to promote NFL Sunday Ticket and YouTube TV. 🏈📺 He needed a captivating greenscreen video to bring his promotion to life, with a tight turnaround window of just 48 hours. 🎬 He didn't want to settle for a TikTok green screen. 🚫 After all, this was a national campaign that required a professionally shot video before he caught his flight the next day! 🌎✈️ 💡 As a content producer, I completely understood his dilemma and told him to come to the studio without hesitation. In just 3 hours, we filmed and edited every frame, meticulously capturing each outfit change and scene transition. 🎥✂️ And funny enough, I was guiding him on the required script and playing the part of the person he was talking to, located just off-frame! 🗣️🤣 💥 The whole thing came together on a cool LA evening, ensuring influencer, Jonquall, could catch his flight the next day and meet the submission deadline. While it may have been last-minute (and a little stressful), it was a fun and creative project. 🌟 🖥️🌌 The videographer, lead editor, and I worked hand in hand to create AI-generated backgrounds in Photoshop. These stunning visuals were seamlessly integrated behind the influencer, making him appear effortlessly in the studio and even on the football field! 🏟️😮 🎥👀 I'm sharing all of this because I understand how stressful last-minute, high-priority projects can be, but sometimes you have to jump in with a dose of creativity and have some fun in the moment.
