I recently made a mistake when celebrating a great month in our company.  We blew away our goal and I wanted to recognize our team. Instead of just congratulating our team for their great accomplishment, I threw in the dreaded "but" at the end of it. "but, next month will most likely be much different." There was no need for me to do this.  I intended to shield them from a possible letdown the following month since we always have a strong January. The "but" was not necessary at that time (and probably not at all). Celebrate your wins.  Recognize the success of your team - the other stuff can wait. A well-informed team already knows of the challenges that may lie ahead and is prepared to handle them. Let celebrating your wins stand on its own.  Do not dilute what your team accomplished. Interestingly, February came and they beat our target for that month as well.....and did it again in March.

It’s game time! Are you winning or losing the restaurant game? Like my San Francisco 49ers who came back from a huge deficit against the Detroit Lions, it isn’t over til it’s over. If you are winning, great! Keep your eye on the prize. If you are losing, it’s ok. Figure out a way to win. I truly believe the first 7 employees are one of the biggest factors in determining a company’s success. 💡 For me, the first few hires are everything. These early teammates don’t just fill roles—they set the tone for the entire company. They define our culture, set the bar for work ethic, and shape the identity of who we are and how we operate. What I find surprising is that in many conversations with investors, there’s so much focus on product, market fit, and growth strategies, yet very little emphasis on a team’s ability to build, scale, and manage an organization. For me, this is one of the most critical elements of any startup’s success—your ability to grow an internal organization can make or break your company. This leads to one of my core beliefs: there are always two products to build in any company—the one for your customers, and the one within your organization, your team. Startups often overlook how vital it is to build a strong internal team, but this is where the real magic happens. 🪄 Today, I’m excited to welcome Tyler Shortt to the team as our VP of Revenue. Tyler’s 16+ years of experience, especially in the wine and spirits industry, make him the perfect addition to Hippie Water. He’s a bar raiser, and I know he’ll help us not only grow revenue but also raise the level of thinking, interaction, and performance across the board. Let’s begin building. Celebrating a Decade of Growth and Achievements!   What an incredible journey it has been! A decade at Southeastern Grocers has brought forth a tapestry of personal growth, adventures, new challenges, and unforgettable experiences.   Looking back on the past 10 years, I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities to shape and develop both the business and myself, alongside remarkable leaders. Having held eight diverse positions, each chapter brought unique learnings, cherished memories, and significant accomplishments.   Here are just a few personal highlights: 1. Kosher Partnership with Chef Jamie Geller: We built a Kosher partnership program, intertwining my Jewish background and childhood memories with Chef Jamie Geller, creating a meaningful connection. 2. Alcohol Marketing Reinvention: Leading the transformation of our alcohol marketing strategy across liquor, beer, and wine, leveraging my background in the adult beverage industry to Southeastern Grocers. 3. Magazine Manager for 'Flavor' Magazine: From content creation to on-set shoots in New York, leading the development of 'Flavor' magazine was a journey of creativity and collaboration. 4.Leadership in New Store and Renewals Marketing Programs: Overseeing teams to deliver impactful marketing programs for new stores and remodels. 5. Business Lead for Transformational Initiatives: Steering the transformation of the rewards program in 2018, personalization and customer engagement in 2020, and the redesign of our retail media network, SEG Connects, in 2021. 6. Co-Chair of the Women's Development Network: A 2.5-year journey dedicated to empowering and engaging women and allies in their professional and personal lives through impact, inspiration, and leadership.   I owe a debt of gratitude to my mentors, coaches, and sponsors – selfless individuals who played a pivotal role in my journey. And a heartfelt shout-out to all my bosses, team members, cross-functional collaborators and supplier partners who have made this journey so much fun!   As a token of appreciation, over the next 10 days, I'll be sharing my Top 10 Tips learned along the way. Great Place to Work, which has surveyed employees around the world about their experiences for three decades, is out with its 2024 Fortune Best Workplaces in Retail List. Several grocers made the cut – and actually went to the head of the class – in this year’s report. Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. came in at No. 1 for the ninth year in a row in fact, based on the criteria of positive employee feedback. The c-store chain Sheetz, Inc. took the second spot, followed by Target Corp. Coming in at No. 5 was Publix Super Markets, Other grocery, mass and c-store leaders in the top tier of the retail workplace rankings include Walmart (No. 7), Nugget Market, Inc. (No. 8), The Spinx Co. (No. 9), Island Pacific Supermarket (No. 11) and ALDI US (No. 18).

An Absolute MASTERCLASS in #Marketing right here by Molson Coors Beverage Company. In an era where ads are everywhere in sports (like on jerseys), Molson took such a brilliant approach here. Normally, someone's name would be on the top of the jersey but when many players have ponytails or longer hair covering their name, it's disappointing. It's a common problem in women's sports. So... for this new women's hockey league that just launched, Molson announced that instead of player's names being featured at the top of a jersey like normal and risking being naturally "covered up" they put their company advertisement at the top so that the COMPANY is covered up by hair. All player's last names will then be at the bottom of the jersey in full view for everyone to see. Molson will get so much positive press behind this and they should. It's a great way to naturally integrate while leading with value, not the sale. Will someone buy Molson because they like beer? Sure. Will more people (especially individuals who play/watch hockey) now buy Molson because they were at the forefront of something cool like this? 100%. Lead with value and integrate naturally.
