Could Primitive Reflexes Be the Culprit? 👀 ❔ 👉 Primitive reflexes are automatic movements controlled by the brain stem. These reflexes develop before birth to support survival and aid in the early stages of infant development. It is essential for these reflexes to integrate or mature to pave the way for advanced learning and smoother movement patterns. 🧠 👉 Typically, reflex integration occurs between 2 months and 3 years of age, varying based on the specific reflex. This integration should naturally happen through movement and achieving developmental milestones. When a reflex is retained, it indicates weaknesses in the central nervous system and can persist into adulthood. What is key, however, is to take a moment and ensure that whatever goals we consider as OTs or parents are indeed supportive of a child's unique neurtoype and neurology. For example, an autistic teen may struggle in meal prep due to challenges in the executive function skills of planning, sequencing, and working memory. To best support this child, a visual checklist may be a valid and neurodiversity-affirming support. Another example would be a young autistic child who struggles to put their arms into shirt sleeves. This may stem from body awareness and motor planning challenges. When a child is motivated to dress independently, working on the skills for dressing is supportive and would be important to address and practice with a child! Stuttering and cluttering may sound alike, but they’re distinct fluency disorders with unique characteristics requiring different therapeutic approaches. 🔄 Stuttering is characterized by disruptions in the flow of speech, such as repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words, prolongations of sounds, and blocks where speech is halted. It often comes with tension or struggle in producing words. 🚫 On the other hand, cluttering involves rapid and/or irregular speech rate, making the speech sound fast and mumbled. 🗨️ People with cluttering may insert extra words or syllables, making their speech hard to follow.
