If you’re trying to sell to the NHS, you’re probably pulling your hair out. Why is it so hard? We can think of many factors, but one of them is undoubtedly that there are too many ‘experts’ offering unhelpful or misleading advice without having genuine, firsthand experience of the thorny issues e.g. as founders, mentors, commercial leads, and advisors to Government. Liam Cahill, Liz Ashall-Payne, and Henry Stoneley are the antidotes to this phenomenon, having sold, scaled, and supported health innovation to the point that they should have been the first three we all asked. Peerr first Roundtable hosted by Hassan Chaudhury HonFAPM promises to tackle the big issues head on, begins with a bang on Thursday 29th August, 6pm. Based on my own uniquely challenging healthcare journey and the significant lessons I’ve learned from that experience and in my capacity as Co-Founder of RiskAverse, I feel compelled to share my story in hopes of helping others find effective solutions for their own daunting health problems. Around a decade ago, I experienced a series of extraordinary accidents and injuries that left me in immense pain. As an aspiring healthcare provider, I naturally turned to the U.S. healthcare system for the answers I so desperately needed. However, after years of appointments with countless specialists, I instead found myself feeling lost and discouraged, fearing that my pain and suffering had become my “new normal”. At the time, I truly believed the system had completely failed me, just like it has failed so many others. Thankfully, this article is not another tragic story of a patient lost to the abyss. With the support of my friends and family, as well as my unrelenting determination, I was able to pick myself back up and use my experiences and resources to more effectively find the care that was right for me, with practitioners who truly listened to my story and never gave up on me. Thanks to the support of my loved ones and these remarkable practitioners, I can say that this painful part of my life is behind me. The lessons I learned through this experience lit a fire under me to make a true difference, and I knew something had to change. As a young adult with great access to care and a formidable support system even I almost lost to the system, which is why I pivoted my career goals from care practitioner to digital health founder. This is my story about how the American healthcare system ALMOST beat me and why I now devote every day of my life to building RiskAverse. https://lnkd.in/e94tfsww #patientexperience #patientjourney #digitalhealth #healthcare

Today NAACOS' Board Member and Policy Committee Chair, Stephen W. Nuckolls testified before the U.S. House Committee on Ways & Means Health Subcommittee during the hearing, "Improving Value-Based Care for Patients and Providers." Mr. Nuckolls emphasized the importance of appropriately designed financial benchmarks and aligned incentives in sustaining the transition to value. "It is critical that we ensure that ACOs have fair and accurate benchmarks so that providers do not have to face the tough decision to leave a program in which they were previously successful. The savings achieved in these models directly impact patient care by expanding care teams, providing additional beneficiary services that are not billed to Medicare, ensuring provider retention with enhanced provider payment, and investing in technology or other services that enable care coordination and population health management." Read the full written statement for the record here: https://lnkd.in/ejDhXsAX We appreciate the Committee's attention to these important issues. Our #healthcare system is in crisis and #valuebasedcare offers opportunities to improve quality of care for patients, reduce total health costs, and better support clinicians in the practice of medicine. Founder + CEO of Wellworth, a health advisory firm helping family offices and high net worth individuals navigate healthcare.
The costs of choosing the wrong doctor. It’s no surprise that people find choosing a provider confusing, considering there are over 160 different types of medical specialties and subspecialties. Choosing the right doctor is more complicated than simply Googling your symptoms and clicking on the first name. Why consulting with a health advisor matters when choosing a doctor: You’ll avoid unnecessary costs. When you visit the right specialist first, you avoid paying extra copays and other out-of-pocket costs. You’ll have better options. When faced with the same symptoms and health history, doctors can differ significantly in their diagnosis and treatment approach. Comparing doctors on your own requires time and effort, and there may be other types of specialists you haven’t considered that could treat your condition. You could prevent a misdiagnosis. A study published in The British Medical Journal found that diagnostic errors affect at least 1 in 20 adults in the United States. _ _ _ Have you had to change doctors because you weren’t getting the care you needed? Let me know in the comments below. For more tips, link to the full article in the comments. Need healthcare advice? Tackling the world’s toughest health challenges as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Johnson & Johnson
Patients have a bigger voice than ever in healthcare. Many are actively managing their own health, while advocating for the wellbeing of others, and their lived experience is shaping how healthcare innovation is developed and delivered. Patients today are Change Agents. They are catalysts for progress. I am proud that Johnson & Johnson has led the way in supporting patient advocates. Ten years ago, we launched HealtheVoices to empower and educate online health advocates. Over the past decade, more than 1,200 patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers from 19 countries representing more than 100 health conditions have participated. At this year’s HealtheVoices conference, I was honored to share the stage with Sophia Esteves. In 2001, Sophia was diagnosed with a condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension or PAH. When she learned that PAH is a rare, progressive and life-threatening disease, Sophia decided to start a support group in her hometown of San Antonio and began sharing her experiences on Instagram as The_PHWarrior. When health advocates like Sophia share their stories, a lifeline is created, and millions are reached who might otherwise be alone in facing their health challenge. To Sophia and health advocates everywhere—thank you for everything you do! #patientadvocacy #changeagents #healthevoices24

I deeply admire the dedication of healthcare professionals who tirelessly strive to provide excellent care and explore ways to improve our overall well-being. With over two decades of experience in the field, I've witnessed firsthand the exceptional commitment of these individuals. While the majority are dedicated and diligent, there are instances of burnout, bias, and uncertainty that can affect their performance. Recently, I was reminded of my own journey advocating for proper care when my concerns were initially dismissed. Thankfully, I trusted my instincts, which ultimately saved my life when I experienced acute symptoms. This experience reinforced the importance of not ignoring warning signs and being proactive in advocating for our health. It's crucial to stay informed, do our research, and find healthcare providers whom we trust. Despite any frustrations we may encounter, it's essential to recognize the challenges healthcare professionals face and work together constructively towards better outcomes. #medical #patientadvocate #patientengagement #patientexperience #healthcare #healthcareexcellence

as a follow up to the #systemsthinking piece I posted earlier today I came across the fantastic article via Andrew Meiner about the realities of #patientcentriccare https://lnkd.in/eEx6TZv2 "our health system is in this place because it arose from a fundamentally paternalistic model of medicine in the mid-twentieth century.[....} that same model of care flows from ethos into infrastructure. " If the system is set up like this, then the ability to transform it is always limited by its format. One might argue we need to engage patients more, or need to prioritise funding on #socialcare ( as I do) or a number of other approaches, as the means to unbreaking a broken delivery/funding model, but if the model itself is resistant to having such new modes of clinical delivery and resolution applied then one is simply pushing water uphill. Moreover a model in which patients are genuinely empowered and importantly have a greater say in the ownership of their information then this becomes exponentially harder.
What does “patient-centred” really mean?
