Last week, we hosted a webinar on the upcoming EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR). The EUDR is a landmark regulatory initiative that will ban the sale or export of certain products unless it can be proven they are “deforestation free.” In case you missed it, here are some of the key insights: ⚠ If companies don’t have a due diligence statement for products in-scope of the Regulation from 30 December 2024, these products will not be able to enter the EU market and may be confiscated. 🔐 The new rules will require strategic and transformational responses from companies. Tackling this head on can ensure companies mitigate risks and benefit from new value and opportunities. 📊 A company’s response to the EUDR can present them with a comprehensive framework to effectively address new sustainability regulations coming down the track. 🌍✨ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! 🌱📅 Yesterday, the European Commission proposed a postponement of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), aiming for new start dates of 30 December 2025 for large companies and June 30 2026 for micro- and small enterprises. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗱! ⚠️ 𝗜𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗯𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱. 🏛️🤝 While this proposed delay may seem like good news for those companies, which were not ready - is there anyone?? - companies should 𝗻𝗼𝘁 take a breather! ⏳ Many stakeholders are still unprepared, and the time to act is 𝗡𝗢𝗪 so that you won't find yourself in the same situation a year from now you find yourself in now! 🔥 The EU Commission released additional guidance documents yesterday, which will provide essential clarity on compliance, but businesses must begin implementing changes immediately! 📋🔍 🌟 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 - The postponement is just a 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙖𝙡; it needs approval from Member States and the EU Parliament. 🗳️ 𝟮. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆 - Whether delayed or not, use this time wisely to ensure you’re ready to meet compliance standards! 📈🔧 𝟯. 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘄 - Delaying preparation is not an ESG risk. It is a businesses risk as even with a delay, the Regulation will take effect eventually! 🚨 The EUDR is a crucial step towards combating global deforestation and sustainable practices. The latter part is often overlooked in Malaysia, where all focus is on the deforestation. #ESG #Sustainability #EUDR #CorporateResponsibility

🌱 Since the introduction of the EU Green Deal, several ESG initiatives have been implemented, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Most of these initiatives are classified as either 'Regulations' or 'Directives.' Even if the title doesn't specify, they usually belong to one of these two categories. With this approach, the EU has two different ways of implementing initiatives and ensuring that they are realized. 🔎 But what exactly differentiates a Regulation from a Directive? What do #EUDR, #CSRD and #CS3D have in common? ➡️ They’re all European directives aimed at protecting the environment and strengthening sustainable practices. ➡️ They’re all initiatives of the European Green Deal. ➡️ They all affect your supply chain operations. 🔍 The EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) aims at preventing certain commodities - such as oil palm, soy, wood, cocoa, coffee, cattle and natural rubber - as well as their derivatives from entering the European market if their production caused deforestation or forest degradation, was illegal, or violated human rights. 📊 The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) revises the Non-Financial Reporting Directive, introducing new rules on sustainability reporting for a broader range of large companies and publicly listed SMEs. Its objective is to enhance transparency and completeness of ESG matters reporting. 📋 The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD or CS3D) requires large companies to conduct due diligence on their entire supply chain to ensure compliance with ESG standards, preventing negative impacts on society and the environment. Companies must also provide remediation if their supply chains have caused adverse impacts. 🍏 Food for thought! What does this tell us? A new #trend is emerging, and companies wanting to remain competitive must take notice. It is no longer enough for a company to ensure its own operations comply with commercial laws and ESG-related directives, it needs to scrutinise its supply chains from start to finish. After all, these supply chains are still subject to European regulations, even though they extend beyond European borders. 🔦 This puts #traceability in the spotlight as a core strategic asset. Businesses can benefit from it to understand what is happening at the very start of their supply chains, how the raw materials are sourced and handled through the value chain, and ultimately how they reach the final consumers. Traceability is the path forward to compliance and maintaining market relevance. 💚 EcoVadis provides the whitepaper that outlines concrete steps and best practices to get ready for the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) which is expected to be implemented by 2025. 🔊 Key highlights include: The CSDDD will require large EU and non-EU companies operating in the EU to conduct due diligence on human rights and environmental impacts across their value chains. To comply, businesses should start by mapping their value chain, assessing risks, and implementing policies and processes to identify, prevent, and mitigate ESG risk. Companies will need robust and validated sustainability data, monitoring and reporting capabilities. Solutions like EcoVadis' Sustainability Intelligence Suite can assist with this. #EcoVadis #ValueChainDueDiligence #SupplierEngagement #ESGReporting #CorporateSustainability #EURegulation #CSDDD #CSRD
