As this year comes to an end, we see multiple posts about reflecting on what has been and our aims for the new year. I did this last year and in September I started a new job at the RSPCA as their Assistant Director for Animal Services. In the last three months I have learnt more than I ever thought imaginable. I started my last job in December 2019, 3 months before a global pandemic. I started this job 3 months before a law is enforced to ban American XL Bully type dogs in England and Wales on 31st December 2023. #EndBSL Nothing challenges you more than learning a new organisation, in a new sector with a new role, on top of a major operational risk that wasn't planned for. It's a test of your resilience and ability to navigate change quickly. Luckily for me I have always been surrounded by teams who have pulled together and thought in an agile and solution focussed way. Reflecting back, there are many similarities between my experiences now and in 2020 despite the different sectors. I worked with vulnerable adults and now I work with vulnerable animals. Both need organisations like the RSPCA and the Social Interest Group (and their supporters) to advocate with them and on their behalf for change. Change is possible - I showed myself that this year - we can change and we can help change the world. Animal cruelty, abuse and neglect is a society wide issue, which requires campaigning for law changes, pro-actively educating the public about good animal welfare and creating strong local communities to champion it. For the last 14 years, PDSA has collected data annually through a nationally representative survey of dog, cat and rabbit owners. 14 years of data gives us unrivalled insight into the impacts of national events such as the cost of living crisis, welfare initiatives and legislative change. We make the report available to everyone, and the findings in the PAW report are often used beyond PDSA, by local and national governments and other charities working on animal welfare. In 2024 owners continue to tell us that the cost of living is having an impact, with 24% of owners (5.4 million pets) saying the cost of living has affected how they care for their pet, with 2% of owners telling us they have had to get pet food from a food bank. You can find the report here: https://lnkd.in/edsNzxDT *There's a huge amount of data and insight that we can't fit into the report

Just in time to enable the RSPCA to lobby the new government for powers and more regulations. Please go to see your new MP, your local councillors and other politicians every month and tell them that complaints can be mistaken or malicious. They are not reflective of actual cruelty or neglect. If they were then the RSPCA is failing drastically considering the very few prosecutions brought each year. Whatever the truth, we need a government run, properly regulated animal welfare system that does not involve the use of charities using investigations and prosecutions to further their own agendas. There is plenty of material to take published on The SHG each month that highlights the issues that are currently topical. Even if your political representative is hostile to your opinions take print outs and hand them in. Their researchers will see them and they are the politicians of the future. Also, please comment on newspaper sites and their social media accounts. The media takes notice even if they seem hostile initially. Please help to spread the word or we will see more restricting and devastating legislation before this Parliament is over. https://lnkd.in/gkUjKN_R
