Binagwaho, A., Ngarambe, B., & Mathewos, K. (2022). Eliminating the white supremacy mindset from global health education. Annals of Global Health, 88(1). Abstract: The term “decolonization” has been increasingly used to refer to the elimination of the colonial experience and its legacy. However, the use of this overarching term masks the real root of the problem. European countries, whose populations are majority white, used their assumed supremacy as justification for the colonization of current low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the majority of non-white people live. This clear overlap between geographic and skin color differences explains how the white supremacy ideology triggered European colonization. Therefore, calls to decolonize global health education must focus on the roots of colonization and fight for the elimination of white supremacy ideology that is one of the pillars of the current ills of our global health architecture. A step in this process acknowledging the expertise that emerges from LMICs, alongside challenging the traditional high-income country (HIC) hegemony over knowledge and strengthening universities in LMICs to provide quality medical and global health education. Additionally, we also need to reevaluate curricula, research selection, and design as well as partnerships. Students need to be equipped with the skills to question norms and contribute to the creation of equitable, mutually beneficial partnerships. This needs to be accompanied by the adoption of transdisciplinary education to address critical societal challenges. By challenging the white supremacy ideology, we can shift the center of gravity in global health to respect the right to equal say in education and research according to the disease burden and the distribution of the world population.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest and continuing cultures in the world, dating to at least 65,000 years ago. Culture is distinct to each language group of First Nation Australians, and as there are over 250 languages, this makes First Nations culture incredibly rich, diverse and complex. It is important to note this to avoid homogenising the identity of Aboriginal nations. As we observe National Reconciliation Week 2024, ‘Now More Than Ever’ we should be celebrating First Nations culture as it is an acknowledgement of history as well as provides an opportunity for First Nations Australians to continue or reclaim and revitalise cultural traditions that have been eroded as a result of past and current colonialism and assimilation policies. We’ve put together a short list of meaningful and respectful ways to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It is estimated that Africa alone is home to over 3,000 ethnic groups, each with its own unique traditions, languages, and customs. This rich tapestry of diversity is a testament to the continent's vibrant heritage and serves as a source of pride for generations past, present, and future. Despite our differences, cultural diversity has the remarkable ability to bring people together. Studies have shown that communities that embrace diversity are more resilient, innovative, and prosperous. By fostering unity amidst diversity, we not only strengthen our bonds but also create a more inclusive and equitable society for all. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES Every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This date, adopted in December 1994 by UN General Assembly resolution is to raise awareness of the needs of these indigenous population. Each year, Yoruba Cultural Heritage Centre marks the celebration of the Day by sharing information and activities that are relevant to the annual event theme. Who are the indigenous peoples of the world? Indigenous people are the first people to live in a particular place – the original population that first created a community on that land before other people came to live in, conquer or colonise the area. People self-identify as indigenous. That means they decide for themselves whether they consider themselves to be indigenous. There are more than 350 million indigenous people living in 90 countries. They represent 5,000 different cultures and speak the great majority of the thousands of languages that are spoken around the world today. Indigenous communities often have distinct beliefs, culture and customs. Many indigenous people still live in very close contact with the land, with a respect for and understanding of their natural surroundings. Unlike traditional companies facing myriad challenges, adopting a strategic approach and seizing small opportunities becomes imperative for sustained success. ➡ɪᴅᴇɴᴛɪᴛʏ-ᴄᴇɴᴛʀᴇᴅ Past challenges, teach nomad community how important is focus on inside and preserved essential cultural elements. Local businesses, should identify and uphold with the community core values. This consistency can build trust with customers and stakeholders for the long run, contributing to brand loyalty and connection.
