Max Bumpous is celebrating his one year anniversary with Ozark this month! 2024 also starts an exciting chapter for Max as he enters into our Ozark Apprentice Program. Max is eager to learn everything he can about our trucks and how to fix them when they need any kind of repairs. What's the Ozark Apprentice Program you ask? It's the brainchild of our VP of Maintenance, Wayne Skinner and our Technical Trainer, Dewey Bishop who oversees the 5-phase program where apprentice technicians gain hands-on experience and competencies on all aspects of fleet maintenance. We have several different types of shops on the Memphis yard that work on everything from decals to tires to body work. This program serves as a bridge for those who have been through an accredited diesel program, but are looking for more hands-on experience. Why did we create this program? We asked Wayne, who said, "The number of technicians entering the industry has been reducing over the last couple of decades, and a recent stat I read was that only *one* technician is entering the profession for every 2.5 technicians retiring or leaving the industry - this reality has created a challenge for all fleets and businesses who employ skilled technicians." In an effort to continue hiring techs with all skill levels, this program was created to provide skills for those willing to learn. Apprentices have tasks that must be documented and signed off on in order to progress in the program. New apprentices receive a toolbox and are rewarded with increased hourly pay and additional tools as they progress through the program. It's unfortunate that teaching is often overlooked in the development of new talent. As experienced veterans in the trade, it's important that we remember to pass on our knowledge and skills to the next generation. Let's not be threatened by new talent or forget that we were once in the same position. Now is the perfect time to give our apprentices some hands-on experience with wiring and replacing heavy penthouse fan motors. Those diamonds in the rough... I've worked at 20+ odd places in my long and storied career in manufacturing/machining. I have to say, I've had the privilege of working with apprentices/trainees who I found the greatest of respect for, after putting aside my personal biases. As an "old skool" Toolmaker now Engineer, I always wondered if some of my apprentices had the "schmata" to make it. Some did, some didn't. It never took long to see the ones I had confidence in. I never demanded them to "do it my way". I always encouraged them to challenge my teachings, and question EVERYTHING I told them. They gained my confidence and respect by questioning me. You see, experience isn't everything. In fact, experience means that you had a way, your way, of doing things successfully, that YOU were comfortable with. That never implies that your way is "the only or best way to do it". Next time that apprentice/trainee asks "couldn't we try this?", swallow hard, put your ego on the back burner, and at least rationally consider their input. Give them a shot. It will build their confidence and can only make them better. That in turn makes you a better mentor. Their way might just surprise you, and you will learn something yourself. No matter how experienced we are, we don't know everything. Period.

Meet Maan Bains, who works at our Birmingham plant. What is your position? How long have you been with the business? “My current position is Supplier Quality Engineer for Birmingham plant, I have been with the business for seven years. I started as a Manufacturing Apprentice and then became an Operator on the shop floor. I moved into the quality team as a Technician about five years ago, helping to support the plant. I have been doing the Supplier Quality role for two years.” Can you describe your job in 3 words? “Busy, Challenging, Rewarding.” What does your average day look like? “An average is mainly reacting to issues that come in from suppliers, dealing with them the best I can, my job is to keep the production lines running with all the right product. I deal with over one hundred suppliers for this site who are based globally. I deal with all different commodities from tubes, brackets and hoses to fittings and grommets.” What do you enjoy most about working at Lander? “I enjoy developing my understanding of the different processes and building my learning through the knowledge and experience of other members of the team.” What did you want to be when you were young? “When I was young I wanted to be a footballer but it didn’t work out. I went to college and did an engineering course and then the apprenticeship here came up.” Where would you go on your dream holiday? “I would probably say the Caribbean, I would go to loads of different places in the Caribbean and sit on the beach and chill out!!” What do you like to do to unwind? “Watching football, I am a big Liverpool fan. I also help out with my local football team from the temple that I am involved in. Rewarding excellence 🥇! Today I had the honour to present the Dean’s Award to our summer intake of Automotive Service Technicians. The Dean’s Award recognizes outstanding achievement of an apprentice in their final period of classroom instruction. The criteria for the award is the three A’s of academic excellence. The first A is for attendance. Attendance is more than just merely showing up to class. The expectation is the students are attentive, taking notes, participating in discussion, staying up to date on assignments and completing laboratory assignments on time. The second A is attitude. How you do anything is how you do everything. Attitude is about coming into the class willing and wanting to learn. Making the learning environment a great space for yourself and those around you. These graduating apprentices are the next generation of skilled trades professionals who will be mentoring the next group of apprentices. Thus, it is vital to instill a positive attitude to set them up for success. The final A is the academics or the marks on tests, quizzes, exams, assignments and presentations. This is the A that often creates the most anxiety, as our apprentices want to do well and their career progression is dependent on their academic performance. The key to doing well with the academics is to take care of the first two A’s first. Attend, be on time and make the most of your time in class. Have a great attitude and make the learning environment a great space for you and those around you. If you do that you will find you perform beyond your expectations. Lastly the reason in share this message with our graduating apprentices is as they close this chapter on their professional journey and start the next. Bringing forward a great work ethic and positive attitude will continue to pay dividends as they progress as professionals. #hereatsait

Among a busy, dedicated team, our apprentices are learning valuable skills that will benefit them both within and outside of the workplace. Since starting a Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship at Ferguson Marine 18 months ago, second-year apprentice Simon Millar has developed communication and interpersonal skills alongside developing his technical abilities. “Communication is extremely important in the yard. Many tasks on the yard have many different requirements from a variety of departments. These requirements must happen in stages and must be communicated through supervisors and managers before they can be passed down to us, which in turn need to be fed back with any difficulties or necessary changes. When performing tasks, especially while lifting loads, communication is key for safety, while still being able to perform the job in a time-efficient manner. “On the yard, 95 per cent of all tasks require more than one person to perform them, so teamwork is essential. It is important to maintain healthy professional relationships within the workplace so that work can be performed to the highest standard possible to reach the client’s requirements.” #NAW2024 #NationalApprenticeshipWeek #SkillsForLife
