Earlier last month, over 350 industry professionals convened to assess the momentum of green hydrogen in the Middle East. Through two days of intensive discussions, it became evident that establishing hydrogen as a future fuel for the MENA region presents significant challenges. However, despite obstacles, it’s promising to hear that the industry remains committed to realising the promise of hydrogen as a transformative energy source. #GreenHydrogen #MENA #EnergyTransition

As we pass the midpoint of the year, the hydrogen sector shows signs of robust #recovery and #growth. The #investment lows seen in 2022 and 2023 have been surpassed. This resurgence, coupled with significant #growth in #Asia and a burgeoning global project pipeline, suggests that the sector may have reached its low point in the first half of 2024. In H1 2024, we recorded over 531 new hydrogen and synthetic fuel projects, with 411 of these based on electrolyzers. The total added #electrolyzer capacity exceeds 500 GW, and the average project size of newly announced projects reached 1.2 GW. between ambition and reality: Northwest Europe's low-emissions hydrogen production could reach 7 Mt by 2030 -almost the double of its current grey hydrogen demand. however, most of these projects exists only on paper, excel tables and nice power point slide decks. around 96% of the proposed hydrogen projects are either undertaking feasibility studies or are in just conceptual phase. less than 4% of northwest European hydrogen projects reached FID and/or are under construction. in contrast, in China their share is more than half, highlighting greater project maturity. closing the gap between ambition and reality will require stronger policy focus on demand creation, the design of more holistic support mechanisms, better regulation and closer cross-regional cooperation. time is ticking and Europe clearly lagging behind its hydrogen ambition set for 2030. our latest Hydrogen Monitor provides a deep dive in hydrogen policies, regulation, support mechanisms and project developments. what is your view? how can we accelerate the scale-up of a low-emissions hydrogen market? #gas #hydrogen #FID

BLUEPRINTING THE HYDROGEN MARKET⏬⏬ At this point in time, there is no spot market in (#grey) hydrogen. However, a spot market in hydrogen is expected as a consequence of the move towards #greenhydogen, bringing huge changes in the market. Currently, hydrogen is largely grey hydrogen, made from natural gas (reforming), on-site where the demand is, largely as industrial feedstock. This feedstock-hydrogen is largely produced locally and continuously. The study seeks to better understand the requirements of the future hydrogen system in order to establish a robust #blueprint for a #hydrogenExchange in the #Netherlands. The hydrogen exchange should allow for an expected gradual build-up of the hydrogen market and cover an expanding geographical area and include future aspects of the envisioned hydrogen system (such as storage and interconnection). ⏬⏬⏬ Follow Africa Hydrogen Hub (AHH) for more updates.
