An enormous part of the #hydrogen infrastructure tapestry is #storage. In #saltcaverns, depleted gas fields, and more there is an opportunity to store the #molecule long-term and dispatch it as needed through pipelines. The #H2EQuarterly speaks to Boris Richter, managing director at STORAG ETZEL GmbH, and Charlotte Roule 夏澜, director general of Storengy - ENGIE, about the challenging but rewarding task of building up this capacity. #ThrowbackThursday to our Autumn Market! 🍂🎃🍁 🦖At our cocktail reception at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, we had the wonderful chance to return after the summer break for an evening of networking, tasty food and drinks with our guests - who also had the opportunity to taste HYDROGIN®️ by thyssenkrupp nucera, a special #hydrogen-themed cocktail! 🍸 As our CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis mentioned that evening, “We are at many crossroads, and we need to overcome them in order to achieve our #netzero goal! Let’s say goodbye to the dinosaurs and celebrate the future!” But the excitement doesn’t end here – we can't wait to see you at our upcoming #WinterMarket during the European Hydrogen Week on 18 November! 🔗 Register now for free and secure your spot ➡ https://lnkd.in/eYJFBwBK 🎥 Experience that night's atmosphere in the video below!

📗In the latest edition of #H2EQuarterly, we're diving into one of the most critical topics for the future of the #hydrogen sector: #hydrogen #transport and its #storage. As the #hydrogenmarket evolves, growing supply and demand of the #molecule leads us to another issue – how to transport it and where to store it. Hydrogen infrastructure is needed across Europe to connect demand centres with production centres. And while there is obviously a significant cost to this, there are numerous benefits to investing in these critical pipelines and storage facilities now to ensure a resilient and secure net zero future. In one of our lead article “Two is better than one: building up the infrastructure”, we speak to Christopher Andrey, from Artelys Belgium, as well as Anthony Mazzenga , from GRTgaz about the benefits and barriers of a #hydrogen infrastructure. Happy #WorldHydrogenDay! 🌍💧 On 8 October, we celebrate globally the most abundant element in the universe. #DYK? ➡ The name #hydrogen comes from the Greek words, hydro meaning ‘water’, and gene, meaning ‘forming’. ➡ It is a superlative element: the lightest, smallest, and simplest! ➡ Stars are made of hydrogen, which provides them the energy to keep shining for billions of years. ➡ The atomic weight of hydrogen is 1.008 – which looks very similar to the American way of writing dates. Hence, our celebrations take place today, 8 October. And last but not least: ➡ There's a whole week dedicated to all things hydrogen coming up on 18-22 November in Brussels. What better day than today to register (free of charge!) to the European Hydrogen Week? See you there 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYJFBwBK #HydrogenNow #EUH2Week

The International Energy Agency (IEA) published its Global Hydrogen Review 2024, an annual publication that tracks #hydrogen production and demand worldwide, as well as progress in critical areas such as #infrastructure development, #trade, #policy, #regulation, #investments and #innovation. Some takeaways from the report: ➡🍃Clean hydrogen market penetration is growing fast, at a growth of 50% since 2021. ➡💧Installed #electrolyser capacity has grown by 9 times at global scale. ➡❗However, in Europe, the electrolyser installed only grew by a factor of 3. This is a clear symptom that Europe is losing its starters competitive advantage to China and the USA. Things have to rapidly improve to bring more clarity and certainty to get private capital going into important projects. ➡ 📝 The interest from future consumers of clean hydrogen is also growing and a larger share of projects have now reached #FID, 7% (from 4% last year). Still, not enough. As the IEA points out, there are a number of important aspects that need to be address, such as more support to get off takers signing long-term contracts, both economically but also through the development of infrastructure. And considering the monumental challenge ahead, there should be more pragmatism on the definition of renewable and low carbon hydrogen, avoiding unnecessary costs that impede the take-off of this nascent sector. 🏦 The European Commission has released the anticipated Terms and Conditions for the second auction of the #EUHydrogenBank, allocating an additional €1.2 billion to support the production of RFNBO #hydrogen. We commend numerous aspects of the new auction structure, the Commission having set ➡ a €4 per kilogram price cap, ➡ five-year timeline for project commissioning, and ➡ two-and-a-half-year deadline to reach final investment decision. These terms were explicitly sought after, almost unanimously, by our large and diverse membership. Meanwhile, the introduction of mandatory resilience criteria for the next call will greatly aid the push towards a more resilient, industrialised, and energy-secure Europe. Prospective projects bidding in the next call will have to limit the sourcing of #electrolyser stacks (which include surface treatment, cell unit production and stack assembly) from China to a proportion of no more than 25% (in MWe) to fulfil this criterion. Compliance with European and international safety and cybersecurity standards will also be a mandatory requirement. Less positive is the missed opportunity to expand cumulation #flexibility, which would include projects already benefiting from #funding, the introduction of sectoral baskets and the cap for maximum bid amounts, that might undermine participation. There is also no indexation to inflation, which could provide extra uncertainty in the event of price fluctuations. The second auction is tentatively scheduled to launch by the beginning of December, right after our flagship: the European Hydrogen Week 2024. We remain committed to working with industry stakeholders and regulators to unlock the European #hydrogeneconomy and enable the #energytransition.
