How can #energy be more affordable in #Europe? This was one of the questions tackled earlier today in a meeting with EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, and #H2Europe’s CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis and Daniel Fraile, Chief Policy & Market Officer as well as Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO of Brintbranchen and Member of the Hydrogen Europe Board. Some other topics of discussion were: 🔵 #Energygrids: exploring the potential of having one physical #grid consisting of electricity, gas, and #hydrogen parts, as well as CO2 and heat.  🔵The College of Commissioner’s recent trip to #India: specifically, the EU-India #greenhydrogen forum as a strategic opportunity for the two biggest democracies in the world   🔵#EUHydrogenBank: highlighting the external leg of the mechanism and its contribution to advancing international hydrogen #trade  🔵#Datacentres: and their importance to the EU as critical infrastructure that needs stable and #cleanenergy supply. They should be powered via independent ‘energy islands’ – which will improve their security while avoiding cannibalisation of grid power – and will need special conditions to be taken care of  🔵#Regulation: how the Delegated Acts for #renewablehydrogen and for #lowcarbonhydrogen can accelerate the pace of the #energytransition. The EU #SteelMetalsActionPlan: another string to the bow for Europe's #cleantech sector and for the #decarbonisation of its key industries 🏹 “Once again #hydrogen is placed at the centre of the transition - we are pleased to see a direct acknowledgment from the European Commission that hydrogen is the best route to decarbonisation for primary #steel production.”, commented Laurent Donceel, #H2Europe’s Director of Transport, Industrial Policy and Sustainability. 🌿 It's equally positive to see the commitment to the buildup of European green #leadmarkets, supporting key industrial sectors that are ready to utilise #cleansolutions. Labelling schemes, #sustainability criteria, and dedicated #funding mechanisms are necessary first steps to incentivise the offtake of #greenproducts. The Commission’s proposal to make the #ETS indirect cost compensation permanent beyond the initial 2030 timeline is a crucial element as it enables more competitive #cleanhydrogen production for use in energy intensive industries. #Germany’s largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) #electrolyzer has gone into operation at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site. Designed to produce zero-carbon #hydrogen, the electrolyzer has a connected load of 54 megawatts and the capacity to supply the main plant with up to one metric ton of this substantial chemical feedstock every hour. The plant was officially inaugurated in the presence of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, and Mobility Katrin Eder, and Udo Philipp, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Built in cooperation with Siemens Energy, the water electrolyzer is embedded in the production and infrastructure at the Ludwigshafen site, making it truly unique in terms of its interface and integration into a chemical production environment. A total of 72 stacks – modules in which the actual electrolysis process takes place – have been installed in the system. The electrolyzer has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at BASF’s main plant by up to 72,000 metric tons per year. 📸 #HeroesOfHydrogen2024 For the first story of our photobook we travelled to #Germany to talk to Manfred Schuckert, head of automotive regulatory strategy at Daimler Truck AG, and Andrea Engelen global head of external affairs & government relations at cellcentric GmbH & Co. KG, current #fuelcell manufacturer for the #GenH2Trucks, to become more acquainted with the work that they are currently carrying on. They shared with us their inspiring vision of how #CO2neutral heavy-duty commercial vehicles will play a huge part in society’s everyday functioning, and the strategic decision to choose #hydrogen as technology. 🚛🌱 “Clearly, we need to go for all #zeroemission technologies, batteries and #hydrogen being the main ones. Hydrogen will play a big role in that game”, said Schuckert. “The reality is we need to work together now, especially when it comes to fuel cell systems, to create this critical mass and deliver the much-needed infrastructure. Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra and Croatian Minister Marija Vučković visited today our member DOK-ING Indeloop which provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the project "S2H2: From Sludge to #Hydrogen for a #CircularEconomy" and Indeloop’s groundbreaking #innovation. "Today I had the opportunity to witness spectacular company firsthand that produces a technology that successfully bridges many challenges, elevating solutions to a new level. Looper demonstrates that #Croatia has what it takes to lead in #clean hydrogen production, crucial for Europe's energy future. The European Commission fully supports projects like this, essential for reaching our goal of #netzero emissions and ensuring a #sustainable energy future", stated Commissioner Hoekstra. Minister Vučković noted the importance of continued governmental support: "Looper, as uniquely Croatian innovation, holds immense potential not only for our country but for the entire European Union. Innovations like Looper are essential in achieving Europe's #climate objectives". "We've observed significant interest in our innovation, which motivates us to continue developing Looper technology. 💧🌱In a groundbreaking step for the #hydrogenmarket, TotalEnergies and RWE have for the first time agreed on conditions for the purchase of #greenhydrogen over a period of 15 years. The agreement stipulates that TotalEnergies will purchase around 30,000 metric tons of green #hydrogen per year from RWE for its #refinery in Leuna (Saxony-Anhalt) from 2030. This is the largest quantity of #climateneutral hydrogen ever contracted from an #electrolyser in #Germany. The agreement is a signal for the German market because fuel suppliers such as refineries are encouraged to gradually reduce their #greenhousegas emissions over time. Using 30,000 metric tons of green hydrogen in a refinery saves 300,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. That's how much 140,000 cars emit on average per year. Our photobook showcases four heroes who represent the different parts of the #hydrogen value chain, each bringing a leadership mindset and entrepreneurial spirit to the challenge of establishing hydrogen as a crucial enabler of #decarbonisation. ➡ In Germany, Daimler Truck AG’s professionals, are working on achieving #zeroemission mobility for #heavyduty vehicles together with cellcentric GmbH & Co. KG – a dedicated #fuelcell producer for both Daimler Truck vehicles and the market at large. ➡ In Estonia, Stargate Hydrogen’s team is working to unlock #renewablehydrogen by maximising the efficiency and minimising the costs of #electrolyser technology. ➡ In the Netherlands, the Port of Rotterdam is becoming Europe’s largest port that is gearing up to lead in #H2export and #H2import – providing the #molecule to the industrial heartlands of the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and beyond. ➡ In Italy FINCANTIERI , Europe’s largest and the world’s fourth largest shipbuilder, is working hard in the present to be prepared for the future as it gets ready to decarbonise #maritime transport with the hydrogen #molecule. 👏 A big thank you to the amazing experts and professionals who shared their stories and who are contributing to a #netzero future!
