UT Extension is helping make career goals a reality with a new pilot project called Future Ready: Career Exploration Powered by VR. Skill Up Tennessee, UT Extension’s SNAP Employment and Training program, is piloting the use of virtual reality career exploration technology to help adults try out various technical training options in an immersive way. The purpose is to help them explore what training would be like for several in-demand occupations. Middle-skill jobs – those requiring more than a high school diploma and less than a 4-year degree – are in demand and training is offered by numerous providers across the state. Family and Consumer Sciences Extension agents and Skill Up Tennessee Career Navigators are engaging with people at events and in group settings using the Transfr technology. The goal is to help individuals discover a training they want to pursue. Individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits can sign up for Skill Up Tennessee to potentially cover future training costs. Melissa Dobbins, Central Region Career Navigator said, “The beauty of this project is that if people are undecided on a specific job field, they can experience a different route. One gentleman wanted to do construction on bridges and overpasses but quickly realized that he could not handle the heights.” She went on to share that partners in the medical field who have used the technology note that Future Ready is an immersive, realistic experience that mimics tasks they often complete during the workday.
