Not for the first time over the last year, one piece of economic news appears to directly contradict both the next and the previous one. Whilst it appears likely that the UK entered a mild recession in 2023’s final quarter, sentiment this year appears to be rising. Evidence? Consumer confidence, according to GfK, hit a two year high in January, driven by falling inflation and the linked prospect of interest rate cuts. Just as interesting was the fact that this two year high saw the index reaching a heady -19. In fact, since 2008, the only time the index tiptoed into positive territory was a brief moment of blissful exuberance in 2015. Confidence appears a very relative concept. I think there’s a learning here for employer branding. Candidates want to see confidence being expressed by a potential new employer. Of course they do. They need that reassurance to leave their current role. But they want to see a confidence that is measured, realistic, sustainable and, yes, that word, authentic. In a world where we’re constantly on the look-out for the sham and the scam, too good to be true doesn’t feel very credible.
