Here's the biggest misconception universities made us believe what getting a job as an ARTIST was University gives you the illusion that a job is all about YOU. 1. Your fun 2. Your dreams 3. Your creativity/art Here's the reality of a job: 1. It's not about you, it's about what the company NEEDS 2. It's not about what you want, it's what the project NEEDS 3. It's not you art, nor your identity, nor your self-worth. It's a service! A service in exchange of a salary That's it! I wish I would have understood that back in 2018-2020 I would have served so much better. #job

Weekly Wednesday Thoughts: 💭 When should we start talking about career to students? ✍️Some say junior year of high school. 🖋️Others say once they’ve entered college 🖊️Another, 8th grade My answer: ALWAYS ‼️ I’m pro-early intervention! The sooner we get careers in the minds of students, the more impact we will see and the more empowered they will feel about making a career decision. Why have we stopped career day in elementary schools? Why aren’t students taking music, art, or theater class anymore? How come we say, “you must go to college in order to get a career” when in fact there are other ways? Why do wait for junior year of high school to start having the conversation or only encourage seniors in college to go to their career services? We must start talking about career NOW with students and the way we do that will be for another post 👀 #career #studentdevelopment #earlyintervention #foodforthought

After months and many miles touring Open Days with my daughter, its time to focus closer to home. Today I will be working on an Open Day, with the luxury of attending academic sessions. Whilst it can be seen as a luxury, it is also vitally important that we remember to do this, for three reasons. 1) It enables the outreach team to gain the latest information about new and ever evolving degree programmes. 2) It helps me identify and design potential academic outreach activities to boost recruitment 3) It allows the University to celebrate brilliant sessions and adjust those that may need further support Please don't underestimate what a valuable resource this can be for your institution in the short and long term. #opendays #studentrecruitment #outreach

In my opinion, I don't completely think the younger gernations don't want to work anymore, it's more we're unable to. Yes, some don't because we can easily just become content creators and make a living that way. we have that option now. But, for others, it's a matter of not having the qualifications for a good career anymore. For example, an entry level job now is asking you to have 3+ years of experience, a bachelors degree, and have to know how to use multiple different systems. Some careers I agree with requiring bachelors degrees, however, the rest of the requirements, to me, does not mean an entry level job. To me, it is more of an intermediary to advanced level career. The unfortunate part is, it seems like companies just don't want to take the time to train their employees. They want them out of the gate running and it's not possible unless you were exposed to it early on or know someone who can help. In general, it just makes it harder for the younger generations to continue this work cycle Something needs to change.

** A message for my fellow educators | A Student Resource for Career Exploration ** THE DESIGN RESCUE SHOW VIDEOS ARE NOW INTERACTIVE, WITH HANDOUTS The Design Rescue Show was created to bring guest speakers from the creative industry into classrooms to inform students about their career journey and the challenges they've faced. These videos are not just informative, they're essential for any career exploration unit. I've created reflection handouts that are tailored for high school students, focusing on exploring career journeys and encouraging critical thinking. Each handout is crafted to guide students through a guest speaker's career path, emphasizing adaptability and the real-world challenges that they faced. They include interactive projects like video promotions, product development, and vector illustrations, inspired by each speaker's unique experiences. These resources transform guest speaker videos into dynamic learning experiences, helping students to engage deeply with the content. By using these handouts, you can enhance students' understanding, creativity, and reflection skills.
