We are at the stage of the semester in my supply chain classes at the J.B. Hunt Transport Department of Supply Chain Management at the University of Arkansas where we discuss how #supplychain and #logistics processes directly impact on-shelf availability (OSA) in the #retail industry. If the product is not on the shelf then we can’t satisfy customers! If a retailer continues to fail in this area, then as the late Sam Walton would say, the customer has the ultimate power to fire the company from the chairman on down! Fortunately for us, there is no better expert to discuss these issues than Michael Graen, who after an extensive career in Procter & Gamble, CROSSMARK, and Walmart, continues to help companies work to solve OSA challenges. I love bringing industry professionals in my classes to help us merge theory and practice. This approach to learning continues to help us develop a pipeline of talent ready to contribute to solving problems as our students work in internships and full time roles early in their careers. What an incredible opportunity to day trip with walmart In the world of clunky CRMs, workflow optimizers, and KPI monitoring, it can be challenging to truly grasp where institutional knowledge sits. However, I feel real estate, being that it is impossibly intertwined as physical assets with unlimited entanglements to the larger geo-economical picture, will always operates in a unique space where years of experience, oral tradition and hands-on practice set people apart. Osmosis learning on trips like these keep astounding me—absorbing over 100 years of retail real estate experience in just a few hours is not only enlightening but also a masterclass in optimization. The mentor-mentee relationship is key to preserving these practices. We must commit to learning from those with extensive experience to continue advancing the industry with the same rigor and excellence. Early in my career, someone advised me to always try to be the dumbest person in the room and to just say "YES" to everything. To be a sponge and soak up as much as possible. At times, I felt like a burden. But Walmart has been the opposite. Entering into opportunities like this and the Walmart internship as a whole is the cornerstone of who I strive to be—constantly seeking new experiences that push me both personally and professionally.

Starting a new career has not just been a process of learning more about the industry, it’s been just as much about learning more about myself. At Publix, I was focused on advancing my career up the prescribed ladder instead of figuring out what I was really good at or what I enjoyed the most. It’s been almost a year since changing careers and I have learned a lot about myself. The most striking to me (and most obvious to my wife) is that I really enjoy breaking down business processes and finding ways to improve them. This isn’t because I like business processes. It’s the exact opposite. I don’t want to have to think about all the details. I want the process to take care of itself so I can focus on the parts of the business that interest me more (and hopefully where I can create new value). I’ve always loved learning, but learning about yourself is especially satisfying. #careerchange

Taking a moment to look back and reflect on my time as an intern at Walmart as well as what it looked like for me landing the internship my junior year. I am so thankful for the opportunities granted to me from Walmart and the education that J.B. Why Do We Get Nervous? Today’s the day—my final presentation for my summer internship project with Walmart! 🛒 As I prepare to present, I can’t help but feel those familiar nerves creeping in. You know the ones—sweaty palms, racing heart, a mind suddenly blank despite weeks of preparation. But here’s the thing: why do we get nervous? Well, nerves are a natural response, an indicator that something matters to us. It’s our body’s way of saying, “Hey, this is important!” Nerves keep us sharp, focused, and ready to bring our A-game, which is exactly what I plan to do today. What’s funny, though, is that even when we’ve done all the research, practiced until we can recite our material in our sleep, and prepped every detail, nerves still find a way to sneak in. It's almost like they’re that one item in your Walmart cart that you didn’t really need but somehow convinced yourself to keep. (Come on, we’ve all been there with those clearance aisle temptations!) So, here’s to embracing the nerves. After all, without them, we might just stroll into our presentations like we're browsing the cereal aisle—calm, but maybe not quite as alert as we should be. And where’s the fun in that? To everyone facing their own “final presentations” in whatever form they may take—remember, nerves mean you care. And if you care, you’re already halfway to success.
