Cancer has triggered numerous changes in my personal and business life. Upon reflection, it may be that the cancer (and later COVID) were big flags that I had to learn how to do my work more virtually. I'm making progress, but will still ask to bear with me. #lifecoach #executivecoaching #leadershipdevelopment

✨NEW BLOG POST: Today, October 24th, marks 12 years since my initial diagnosis.✨ READ HERE: https://lnkd.in/gt6z79wH Within these 12 years, I’ve faced many ups and downs, including a second diagnosis 3 years later. But through it all, I never allowed cancer to define me. I had cancer, but it didn't have me. 🌱"I am not a survivor of my circumstances; I am a master of my mindset." 💪 "Strength isn't about what you can endure; it's about how you rise after you've been knocked down." 🌼"I choose courage over comfort, growth over fear, and self-love over doubt." Every challenge we face in the cancer journey is a reminder that we are capable of creating a new reality beyond cancer. This journey doesn't have to be about what happens to us—it can be about how we choose to rise up, heal, and journey on.💖 #mindsetmastery #healingjourney #12years #farrfromfear #youarenotyourdiagnosis

Surviving cancer can be tough but having conversations about it need not be. Some really good ideas here to shift and reframe questions to support those going through treatment. It has helpful conversations about what you can say to have empathy and connection to those with a cancer diagnosis. The last slide also contains the very important reminder to get your screenings as early detection can be a lifesaver. I'm 5 years out as a breast cancer survivor so I know whereof I speak. All of this is #goodadvice - and I am happy to share it far and wide.

I teach doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals English for Healthcare, with a focus on the OET.
An insightful and fun post on how to talk to someone with cancer. These points stood out to me: - Stay open to someone's story - Be curious about it, rather than offer a platitude. - Offering specific help - Just be present (and normal) rather than making them assign you a task. It is worth mentioning that if you are supporting or know someone who is going through cancer then this will impact you too and those feelings need to be taken care of. In the OET, some role plays are between a relative or carer and the healthcare professional. This highlights the importance of 'next of kin' relationships. In contrast, there is no roleplay about talking with friends of a sick person. This absence is for good reasons, namely confidentiality and privacy. Of course, people can nominate medical power of attorney (POA) to friends and loved ones so they can be part of these conversations, but this is not really a common practice. Author and podcaster, Dan Savage, notes that there are two kinds of closeness: 'the biological family and the logical family'. I agree with Dan especially after the experience of losing a close friend to cancer while I lived in Japan. We need to find healthy ways to help living with cancer and other illnesses. Thank you Sharron Moffatt (MHFA®/ACSM) for pointing us in the right direction.

This is an important one to read! Many of us fear saying the wrong thing to someone fighting the dreaded big C - Cancer. You know you want to show your support and you know that saying something is better than saying nothing, but it’s really easy to say the wrong thing; although, as Sharron Moffatt (MHFA®/ACSM) has taught me, it’s not necessarily about right or wrong, it’s about educating ourselves to be better with it. This post has educated me today, so I wanted to share it with you too. Have you fallen foul of this? #CancerAwareness #Wellbeing #MentalHealth

Ok the extroadinary Nigel Latta phoned me today, and he wants to do a few gigs. And when I say just a few, thats what we mean. They're going to be amazing amazing sessions that will skyrocket you into positivity. All the available dates are listed on the Essential Talent page #Keynotespeakers #CEOS #Resilience #nzbusiness #eventmanagers #humanresources #nigellatta #essentialtalent
Nigel Latta phoned me. "Shaun, I think I want to do a few gigs" Resilience is a word we hear a lot about, and something Nigel’s been talking about for quite some time. Since his diagnosis of incurable stomach cancer 4 months ago he’s been tested about as much as anyone can be. On the journey so far he’s learned a huge amount about how to respond when life punches you in the face. This session isn’t about doom and gloom, but the exact opposite—it's about how to stay positive and keep going when all the evidence suggests you should just roll over and mope These are very limited, and can only happen on these dates 14-17th October 4-7th November 19th-28th November 2-5th December 17th-19th December If you'd like to discuss you can email me at shaun@essentialtalent.co.nz or phone me on 021 466733 #keynotespeakers #resilience #ceos #executiveassistants #eventmanagers
