Rugby and biological warfare: this weekend plays in Paris the final of the Rugby World Cup between New Zealand and South Africa. It reminds me the same final, played in Johannesburg on 24 June 1995. The Springboks won against the All Blacks by 15 to 12. Thanks to a food-borne disease outbreak among the All Blacks team: two-third of the players were sick for the match. Some of them vomited during the match. South-African authorities have always denied the poisoning, and no outbreak investigation was carried out. Nevertheless, despite the absence of epidemiological and biological data, a review of the press articles and interviews done since 1995 suggests a poisoning related to beverages (water or tea). The intentionality cannot be proven, but the chronology strongly advocates for a deliberate biological event. The biological agent was probably in this case an incapacitating agent: no lethality, but the operations need to be suspended. Hoping the French food and beverage will be biological-agent free for this new final NZ-SA! #CBRN #BioRisk #BioThreat #BioWarfare #Rugby https://lnkd.in/eVpd4nEx

#Pubs across Britain want the government to relax licensing laws on Sunday to allow for earlier alcohol sales ahead of England's Women’s World Cup showdown with Spain. Representing over 20,000 pubs, the #BritishBeerandPubAssociation (#BBPA) is advocating for the sale of drinks before kick-off to foster a vibrant atmosphere of unity and support for the #Lionesses. Such a change would require temporary amendments to existing licensing laws and while adjustments to these laws have been made in the past for significant occasions, the current parliamentary recess poses a challenge for immediate implementation. With kick-off set for 11am, pubs are hoping to start pouring pints from 10am. Expected to boost the economy by £185 million this weekend, England beat hosts Australia 3-1 on Wednesday to set up a final against Spain, giving a chance for the Lionesses to become Euro and the World Cup champions at the same time. Injuries to the knee are the most common amongst sports injuries. Learning how to prevent injuries or rather reduce the risk of them happening is important in keeping athletes fit and in the game. Incorporating evidence-based sports medicine in athletes’ wellbeing and development is crucial for the future of sports in our local context. This presentation’s primary audience will be our High-Performance Athletes and Coaches at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. However, anyone else interested in benefiting from the discussions, please let me know. #Sports #SportsMedicine #SportsScience #UTT #UTTPatriots #TrinidadAndTobago #WestIndies #Caribbean #SportsInjuries #Injuries #KneeInjuries

Another week, another morning talking about what's making the front pages of the newspapers with Lisa Millar on ABC News Breakfast. Today, we discussed: 1. Melbourne Cup. Whether you love it or hate, you can't avoid it as it is headline news. However, top marks to The Advertiser for its clever front page inserting the name of three former Cup winners (Let's Elope, Might & Power, Sub Zero) into the headlines of three news stories unrelated to the Cup. The NT News front page dared to be different by not showing a horse on its front page. Instead, it had frogs and a crocodile, referring to the non-horse races that happen in the NT today. 2. The national COVID-19 inquiry increasing its scope to review the evidence used to justify interventions such as lockdowns. The aim of this needs to be an honest appraisal of what happened, not to blame anyone, but to ensure that this inquiry serves as a manual for how to deal with the next pandemic. In 20 or 30 years, if a pandemic occurs, we need our descendants to feel comfortable that the conclusions of this inquiry are genuine evidence-based instructions that they can rely on without having to consider personal or other partisan biases. 3. The PM's and Foreign Minister's trip to China. Australia had an $87 billion surplus with China in 2022-23 and China accounts for about 30% of our exports and imports. This visit has a lot of parallels with another Labor PM's visit to China 50 years ago: Gough Whitlam, not just geographically but photographically e.g. at the Echo Wall. 4. A possible rise in interest rates by the Reserve Bank of Australia today. This would mean an extra $101/month of repayments in mortgage repayments. #covid19 #covidー19 #covid #covid19pandemic #pandemic #pandemicpreparedness Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) #melbournecup #melbourne #interestrates #homeloans #china Anthony Albanese #australia

If Australian Federal and State Governments are serious about supporting the Matildas, they should demand Australian Football gets its structures sorted once and for all, and that Football Australia be the only voice for our game and the only body to sit down at the table to discuss investment, and where it should be prioritised. Reason other sports get more than football is in most cases they have one body seeking support but in football's case, we have one federal body and all the states (6) and territories (2) putting their cases forward. The quicker that process is streamlined, the quicker the benefits for the game on a macro level will be forthcoming. All this talk of public holiday etc should Australia win is just opportunism. Just a vote grabbing headline act. The late Prime Minister Bob Hawke did it (called for day off) after the success of Alan Bond's Americas Cup win decades ago and was on the spur of the elation of that historic win. It went down well and was seen as authentic. There are passionate members of State and Federal Governments loving the current Matildas success as so many of us are too. But lets get serious and focus on major benefits for the long term health of our game for all the young girls and boys who flock to play football. A day off is a sugar hit, plain and simple. Plus I say what the Matildas have shown to date is more than enough to show governments the game deserves more investment, should not need to win it to justify investment. GO MATILDAS! #matildas #soccer #football #government #states #federal #grants #money #votes

A (Penalty) Shot in the Arm for the UK On Trade! It was certainly a real nail biter in the final minutes of England’s quarter final game against Switzerland on Saturday 6th July 2024. Ending up in an all-important penalty shoot-out after extra time had been exhausted, England’s ultimate success brought genuine elation to the country and to the On Trade in particular, as sales of Draught Beer and Cider soared an amazing +37.5% vs. the same Saturday in 2023 and an impressive +30% compared to an average Saturday so far in 2024. England fans sank an incredible 18.6 million pints as they watch England vs. Switzerland in packed pubs around the country - an additional 7.2m pints vs. the last round game against Slovakia. The average pub served 491 pints of draught beer and cider generating an extra revenue of £636 per pub and an extra 134 pints served compared to 2023, with every single draught category growing vs. 2023. Prevention is key.
New Zealand’s rates of domestic abuse are among the highest in the developed world and, while this issue is not specific to rugby, rugby can be a vehicle for change. It’s time for us to take a stand. To bind together against harm in our homes and our communities. Together, we can help prevent harm in our homes and our communities. 🔗Find out more or to seek support: https://lnkd.in/gtF9NXu5

If we look at the four corner model, England's players are supreme athletes in the physical corner. Thanks to the EPPP they are also fantastic technicians. Tactically for their clubs they are also top performers. So why not for England? Psychosocial factors are more than a 'corner', they underpin everything else. So, if that bit isn't right, neither are the others. If you lack drive/motivation, for example, you will struggle to get to peak fitness or other areas of potential. In the past with England the issue has been fear of failure, now it seems to be fear of success - going a goal up and getting more and more defensive, choking. Choking in sport is a crippling form of anxiety that turns world class performers into nervous wrecks. This video is over 20 years old but still incredibly relevant today (apologies it is in 10 parts - follow the links for the next one) and one that I still use clips from all the time: Part 1: https://lnkd.in/dFq4sB59 If England are to progress they need to conquer their fear and "dare to lose to win". Come on England!

Some of my connections asked me about what is happening in Ecuador. Well, back in 1999, some of our parents and family members had to leave the country due to the “feriado bancario” when President Mahuad, among with Lasso as an economic minister, dollarized the economy freezing funds from savings accounts, thousands died, and other thousands left the country. After that, we had like ten presidents in 6 years before Rafael Correa toked office in 2007; he was president for a decade writing a new constitution, the first one in the world to grant rights to nature, and other improvements as a way to dissolve the congress or a way to fire the president, that's “la muerte cruzada,” and it worked. During that time, Ecuador grew importantly, having the best roads in LatAm, we built dozens of hospitals and hundreds of schools, and thousands of young people were granted scholarships to study at the best universities in the world. We invited the world to visit Ecuador by playing an ad at the super bowl. Thousands of miles of optical fiber allowed us to be the most internet-connected country then, and so on. It was ten years of development until Moreno-Lasso started to destroy the institutions and let organized crime infiltrate the state. We ended up being one of LatAm's most secure countries to now being one of the most dangerous countries, as Shown in the following graph. Those are the most notorious results: Ecuador lost its security, education and health systems were destroyed, roads are a disaster again, and sadly thousands of Ecuadorians are leaving the country again as in 1999. La$$o es un fracazo. 2015 super bowl ad. https://lnkd.in/e_4gJkgz
