Hello everyone! This reading week, I was very happy to take part in the 2023 Exeter Blockchain and Law Conference. This mini-conference brought together government, academics and practitioners to discuss current legal issues, including intellectual property, blockchain and artificial intelligence. During the conference, Head of Examining Group in the UK IPO Nigel Hanley talked about whether you can obtain an AI patent. I learned about the Patents Act 1977 and the IPO's published guidelines on which types of AI can be patented. I also attended a session by the Chief IP Officer of nChain Robert Alizon where I learned about Web 3 as the next iteration of the internet and blockchain's ability to create a peer-to-peer economy. In addition, I gained a better understanding of patents, including the concept of licensing of patents, the value of patents in retaining the market value of your invention and the difficulty of getting one.
