If I were not born as an extreme optimist, I'd not have ended up in venture capital - fueling startups at their infancy, that face incredible odds. Seed and early stage VC is about recognizing the massive risks that could kill your project, and helping the entrepreneur navigate around them. Incredible companies like Canva and Zoom and others I have worked with have survived and prospered against all odds. Initially I was surprised when I was asked to be on a panel called "World on Fire" about the massive systemic risks ahead of us with sputtering GDP growth, demographic issues in developed countries, and world / national debt levels climbing to astronomical levels. But now I get it - the analytical side of my brain has always focused on the intersection of "what's coming; and with that - what solutions might make sense?" in both markets and monetary systems, and then driving toward solutions with great entepreneurs wielding innovative technical solutions. Our next generation is entering one of the most tumultuous transitions our society has known since probably WW2. The strains on our monetary and political systems are being reflected in our societal divisions which have been growing for some time; hopefully we can all rally and get our 'societal fabric' unified enough to solve for them. If not.. some of the international passport advice from the legal / technical experts on this panel may be useful at some point..

“Do you want to Coast or Scale?” Seven years as a Trustee for Greenleaf Trust, incubating the project Spark2Life, an organisation with a vision and mission to change the lives of young people caught up in the criminal justice system, led by founder and CEO Dez Brown. Now its own legal entity, it was a pleasure to be part of Spark2Life's first Awayday last Saturday, even the sun came out. 🌞 Questions we asked ourselves. Where are we now? Where do we want to go? How are we going to get there? It was a pleasure to have Lord Michael Hastings, our patron, spend the day with us. He shared his wealth of experience and he challenged our thinking. He asked us if we wanted to coast along or scale the business🤔 This is often the question I pose to CEO’s and directors when I am coaching or leading strategic away days for my clients. How different it feels to be on the receiving end. 🙂 It's a tough question, but a necessary one, for any organisation.  We need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and asking those challenging questions. If yes, why? If not, why? If yes how? what do we need to do differently to move to the next level? If not why, is coasting what you want, or is it fear of the next level? I always advise my clients to take some time to reflect on the previous year and plan for the future. It's beneficial to involve as many team members as possible in the process, as diverse perspectives can help the development of your organisation.  A great day was spent with fellow board members, Christine Giscomb, Emmanuel Goro, and Fitzroy Andrew, Spark2Life Team, CEO Dez Brown, Jamela Ricketts, Richard Hawkins, and Despina Bardosi.

Interesting findings on the important role that family offices are playing in the UK capital markets. Whilst their preference for real estate is widely known, the fact they accounted for 74% of investment into startups in the UK in 2023 and favour tech based businesses is perhaps less so.
