What’s the point of an evaluation of school buildings just after they’ve been built? The 2025 Mayfield Project brings together some of Australasia’s brightest education, design and architecture talent to explore a different major theme every two years. NoTosh has designed and facilitated it for the past 14 years for Learning Environments Australasia. In 2025, it’s the turn of participants to take a second look at “Post-Occupancy Evaluations”. Should they not really be called “Post-Design Evaluations”? And what’s the point if there’s a limit to how much a new space can be further tweaked or overhauled? Do we learn enough from one community’s space use to inform how the next school will benefit? And is that the best value way of engaging communities in designing better spaces? So many questions and about four months to answer them (and come up with more questions on top!). Project Offices Forum Tuesday 10 September 2024 09:30 - 17:30 Farrell Centre, Newcastle This Forum brings together Project Offices operating in UK schools of architecture, and those with an interest in setting-up an office. Project Offices connect architectural practice directly with universities. Often sideways-on to the mainstream, they test new forms of practice through their links to teaching and research. They often support live projects and can offer a full range of architectural services. The first Project Offices operated in a handful of UK schools from the 1960s to the 1980s, typically linked to building science units, developing ideas from the RIBA’s 1958 Oxford Conference on Architectural Education. A second generation of Offices emerged in the 1990s and 2000s, this time in response to university research assessment exercises. A third, contemporary generation of Offices is now producing innovative projects engaging clients, communities, academic research, students, sites, and novel design processes. This event surveys the contemporary field, comparing opportunities, challenges, business models, and recent work: - What do Project Offices do? - What are their distinctive contributions to universities and to architectural practice? - How are Project Offices currently imagined? - And how might they be re-imagined? Bright Spaces, for Bright minds and Bright Futures I supported East Coast Architects in the design of two exemplary schools—7 Fountains Primary School and Vele Secondary School—where innovative daylighting strategies and smart lighting controls have transformed energy use in classrooms. Both schools feature simple, well-placed light switches that encourage the use of natural daylight and drastically reduce the need for artificial lighting. The experience at 7 Fountains helped refine the approach at Vele, where energy bills were compared with those of a neighboring school, showing remarkable savings. “Flexible, dynamic environments that accommodate learning and social activities, responding to evolving needs of modern education.”   A true collaboration with our project partners Mayoh Architects, the design for Macarthur Anglican School’s specialist senior learning facility the Warren Integrated Studies Hub reflects a deep understanding of the evolving needs of modern education.   Responding to changes in the school’s educational program and recognising the proven benefits of outdoor learning, the spaces have been designed to offer flexible, nurturing, dynamic environments that accommodate a variety of learning and social activities.   These spaces encourage hands-on exploration, connectivity, critical thinking, and creativity, allowing students to engage with their surroundings in a meaningful way. Each learning space has landscape views and access to outdoor learning spaces. The open-ended nature of the design lets students connect with the natural environment, whilst interpreting and using the space dynamically, fostering independence and collaboration. "A WELL-DESIGNED SPACE IS WHERE THE RIGHT THINGS HAPPEN.” - Sally Augustin Our proposal has gone through many different scenarios but by retaining a focus on community and culture we wanted our proposal to encapsulate and create this unique network of hubs around the City of London. By using the existing buildings and grid of the city we designed our proposal to optimism all the activities and users the City could encounter. By not only creating this network of canopies that the community could activate but also these organism-like structures that would embed themselves into and onto the structures above. Allowing them to be activated by the needs of the producers. Whether that be production facilities, greenhouses or housing, the structures could accommodate. What is the schoolyard of your dreams like? 🍋Murcia's Directorate-General of Housing & Architecture led a series of 4️⃣ workshops at local schools which gave students capacity to transform their schoolyards to be green, resilient & healthier places! Through innovative methodologies and by applying citizen science, the aim was to reflect on the capacity of NbS and urban green to transform schoolyards into kinder, healthier, more sustainable and resilient places. The objective was that the results of the workshops would provide useful information to give final shape to the projects to be executed in the selected schools as well as promote the incorporation of natural elements into school spaces. "At the Ministry, we support the #GoGreenRoutes Project, and we wanted to accompany the educational centres participating in the workshops to find out what their needs are and offer them a better Quality of life." North Dakota State University architecture student Sydney Seamands completed her master’s degree thesis recently on understanding how to save declining rural communities in the state of North Dakota. The thesis focused on five core areas: child care availability, community and cultural amenities, developing of thriving downtowns, access to single and multi-family homes and access to quality educational opportunities. Seamands looked at five communities across the state before zeroing in on Velva as having the most potential for implementing a simple rural revitalization strategy. Ganapathy Mahalingam, NDSU architecture professor and the thesis advisor for Seamands, said the aim was to develop a revitalization strategy not for just one community like Velva but one that can be utilized in several North Dakota communities seeking development templates. https://lnkd.in/gi5ReGez #architecture #revitalization #thesis #strategy
