Exciting times in the design world! 🌱🎨 The Design Council embarks on a game-changing mission: upskilling a million designers in green design by 2030. As we speak, the Design Council is pooling resources with educators and designers to define these crucial green skills and shape the upskilling programme. This comes hot on the heels of their collaboration with 20 top design and education organisations to revamp the design and technology GCSE course, laying the foundation for this vital shift. This mission calls for a collective effort - bridging schools, higher education, industries, governments, and philanthropists. It's all about creating a robust curriculum that stretches from the classroom to boardroom executives and driving support across the sectors. If you're intrigued or want to be part of this transformative journey, let's talk! Another strong Human Centred Design Event at City, University of London. (Thanks, as ever to Stuart), in the company of Charlie & Paul. Good post grad sessions on Drift, an app designed to encourage mindful walking from Karl Tonna and Racial Biases in Tiktok algorithms from Inemesit Emmanuel. 👏 A predictably strong keynote from Tobias from Arup. My favourite session of the day came from the University of Essex's Tony David Sampson. Its not often you find critical theory, blended with design and presented in a compelling and clear way. Tony talked about the proliferation of "West Coast" attitudes to service and experience design and its obsession with simplification and the removal of pain. He talked about the student experience and how universities smooth out the wrinkles- downplaying the actual hard work, whilst promoting the lifestyle-, citing how marketing images show coffee shop scenes, rather that labs and libraries. Dr. Sampson also looked at the commodification of funerals as a service (FaaS?) as they've evolved from local community rituals into industrial "low cost, no fuss no muss services". In this example, the pursuit of a frictionless and painless process, creates a reductivist denial of the inherent complexity of a human's ultimate moment that matters. It glosses over the need to engage head-on with complexity and messiness and that its these factors that help us to work through the experience and ultimately to flourish and transform. Sampson cites Lauren Berlant's 2011 work, Cruel Optimism, where the pursuit of an ideal is counter productive, but involves fixation on a fantasy in what amounts to a suspension of disbelief. The rabbit hole has opened. Thanks Tony.

is it kind? What if designers first asked, is it kind? What if the measure of design was how well it cared for people and their relationships rather than how profitable it was? The International Design Day theme for 2024, ‘is it kind?’ is about building kindness into design practice. #idd2024 #internationaldesignday #desgn

Thanks David Demers - will be watching this webinar on #accessibledesign. And for my architecture, planning, geography and built environment folks, check this out! Ron Buliung might be of interest to you and your students! 🤓
💼💡Excited to share insights from my recent webinar on Accessible Design! It was a pleasure guiding design professionals through the integration of accessibility into built environments. We explored how incorporating accessibility considerations not only sparks innovation but significantly reduces costs in the long run. It's all about making #Accessibility an intrinsic part of the design process, rather than an afterthought. My aim is to equip professionals with the tools to design captivating, accessible spaces that are safe, inviting, and universally #Inclusive. Stay tuned for future webinars and events where I’ll continue to explore the exciting intersection of accessibility and design. Starting off this week feeling energized after attending Exploring Design Methods, a talk series hosted by IDSA Boston and MIT AgeLab, at the Boston Public Library this weekend! It was great to learn from design and industry leaders Sheng-Hung Lee, Satu Miettinen (She/Her), Jen Ashman, and Mari Suoheimo. ✨ A few quick takeaways✨ 👁️ Learn through observation across the process👂 Observing users during testing and in their adoption of new frameworks offers insight into their mental models, needs, and values. 🚀 Design evolves at multiple levels 🌍 When asking 'what is sellable' in a design context, consider how this impacts processes and outcomes, whether it's an emphasis on decolonization, the adoption of new tools/skills, or a move towards strategic design. 🏠 Play and story foster place and identity 💗 When designing place-based interventions, creating spaces that offer refuge, reflect history, and engage in dialogue with modern elements nurtures culture and conversation. 🐢 Design is not always a sprint 🐇 Solving complex, systemic problems requires careful consideration of the needs of all involved. Many thanks to the organizers and to all who shared their perspectives! #design #IDSABoston #BostonPublicLibrary #designmethods #empathy #servicedesign #creativity
