Want the secret to becoming a more talented CFO or Controller? Do more reps. Alex Hormozi recently posted "Talented people do more reps than untalented people. The REPS make them talented. The talent doesn't make them do reps." Goes back to boring=better. If you want to be a better leader, practice more leadership. Want to be a better accountant, write better reports, present to the BoD better...DO. MORE. REPS.

A culture that creates a revolving door is a leadership failure. If the pay band for the role is $75K why offer $10K less thinking this is a winning position? The candidate will likely take the offer to fill the gap, knowing that they can get a better deal elsewhere and will be actively looking for it. To only be back a year later to fill the same role is a waste of time and resources. That $10K of savings turns out to be quadruple the cost. Sounds like a losing position.

But I had a screening recently that was incredible: "Some managers are like hammers, to them every problem is a nail. But the best managers are like carpenters. They know when to use a level, or a measure, or a hammer, or other tools." Particularly during holy week, the carpenter imagery really hit home. What an awesome perspective, from a supervisor who I'd bet is going to be in a much greater leadership position soon. #hiring #recruiting #management #supervisors

👶 I trained and led my first "direct report" at 15 years old... and he was 1 year older than me 😅 Granted, I was the recently-promoted frycook training up the new dishwasher at a small family-run restaurant... but he still says I was the best boss he's ever had. In my current role, I get to introduce many indivuals to their first leadership roles. It's scary to be the boss, and many folks sell themselves short in thinking they can lead others! My advice? Ask the following two-part question: "Who's the best boss you've ever had? What can I do for you to be the new best?" Be a leader with an open door and open ear, and the "how" will come easily. Aside from compensation, the Middle-Management Quality leaders I've spoken to value these 3 things in a role: 1. An Executive leadership team who supports a culture of Quality *Not having to feel like the "bad guy" but instead feel comfortable to raise issues & be supported by Executive team to implement necessary change 2. A direct supervisor who empowers them to make decisions & one that is realistic with expectations. *One person can only do so much & without necessary resources only so much can be accomplished. 3. Rewarded for performance. Consistent outlets for growth either career or compensation wise. *Not everyone wants to "grow" the same way so a leader who understands what's important to his/her team & one who can find avenues for continued growth (in their eyes) is key.
