This new study found that sleep apnea is linked to poor memory and cognitive issues. This shouldn’t come as a surprise; sleep apnea reduces the amount of oxygen available to the brain and other tissues in the body. Sleep apnea affects almost 10% of women and 25% of adults in the U.S. and up to 60% of people over 65. Some of the most common signs of sleep apnea are loud snoring, breathing pauses (or gasping for air) during sleep, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and dry mouth upon awakening. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s important to be tested immediately. Several validated devices can now be used to test for sleep apnea at home (without visiting a sleep clinic). Treating sleep apnea when present can be a game changer, as it’s associated with everything from diabetes to heart problems to cognitive disorders. #sleepapnea #memory #cognitivefunction

Study links sleep apnea treatment and happier, healthier relationships Link: https://lnkd.in/edJmtDWQ A new study to be presented at the SLEEP 2024 annual meeting demonstrates that when individuals with obstructive sleep apnea use their positive airway pressure machine more regularly, it benefits their relationship with their partner. Results show that greater adherence to PAP therapy was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction and lower levels of relationship conflict. Higher sleep efficiency among patients also was associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction as reported by both the patient and their partner. "Recognizing that sleep and sleep disorders have an impact on the quality of a relationship could be a powerful motivator for those affected with sleep apnea to adhere to treatment," said lead author Wendy Troxel, who is a senior behavioral scientist with RAND and licensed clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at the University of Utah, where the study was conducted. "We developed a couples-based treatment called 'We-PAP' in recognition of the fact that couples' sleep is a shared experience and to help patients and partners overcome challenges to adhering PAP together." #sleep #research #relationships #mentalhealth #sleephealth #sleepapnea #sleep2024 #sleeptrends #osa #health #healthcare #wePAP

Does snoring while sleeping need treatment? Sleep apnea is a common disease, commonly known as "snoring". The prevalence rate is 3%-7%. It is a sleep breathing disease with "sleep snoring accompanied by apnea" and "daytime sleepiness" as the main clinical manifestations. However, its serious harm and widespread damage are not recognized by everyone. When normal people sleep at night for deep repair of the body, consolidation of learning and memory, and clearance of metabolites in the brain, patients with obstructive sleep apnea develop intermittent hypoxemia and hypercapnia due to repeated collapse of the upper airway. disorders and sleep structure disorders. Due to frequent "micro-awakenings", lack of deep sleep, and obstruction of clearance of metabolites in the brain, patients will suffer from decline in memory, attention, executive function, and language function. Over time, patients may experience a decline in cognitive function, and some patients may also experience morning headaches, dizziness, irritability and other discomforts, which may lead to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, cerebrovascular disease, etc. Damage to multiple organs and systems. Therefore, snoring during sleep is a disease and must be treated.
