Long-Term Effects of Sleep Apnea on Health In the U.S., about 6 million adults are diagnosed with sleep apnea. However, as many as 39 million Americans are believed to have this condition. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing stops and restarts frequently while you’re sleeping. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central apnea. OSA, the more common form, results from blocked airflow through your upper airway. Meanwhile, central apnea happens because your brain fails to send signals to the muscles that control your breathing. With sleep apnea, you’re likely to feel tired and sleepy during the day despite a full night’s sleep. And when left unmanaged, the condition can endanger your health in many ways: - Cardiovascular problems - Metabolic issues - Respiratory and digestive disorders - Mental dysfunction To start off, let’s explore how sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. https://lnkd.in/gFnTbTuT

Ankit Parekh, PhD, discusses his previous research where he found that patient's brains work harder to keep them alert when they're sleep deprived, which can make people think that they're less tired despite getting less sleep. "Our findings suggest that the brain employs compensatory mechanisms to maintain alertness and cognitive function even under sleep deprivation, but this can lead to an underestimation of fatigue," says Ankit Parekh, PhD. #SleepDeprivation #BrainResearch #CognitiveFunction #SleepScience #HealthResearch https://lnkd.in/e9fp_5ub

Join me 10/15 for an exciting presentation about my team's recent findings on digital solutions based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. We are honored to present our recent scientific findings at the AMERICAN ACADEMY OF CARDIOVASCULAR SLEEP MEDICINE (AACSM) in this virtual webinar. In this free talk, you will learn how to integrate safe and effective solutions into your practice to help your client's with their sleep health. In addition, we will discuss innovative ways that you can improve your own sleep health. Please Register here: https://lnkd.in/ewQKHuRY With the CDC identifying that 75% of U.S. adults have a sleep disorder, and more than 80% of individuals with sleep apnea undiagnosed, poor sleep health is perhaps the biggest public health issue that our society faces. The big culprits include sleep disordered breathing (apnea), insomnia, and sleep deprivation. All of these reduce your brain's ability to restore itself and ward off chronic disease. In this talk I will focus on how digital solutions like SleepSpace can help with issues regarding falling asleep and staying asleep, in addition to improving sleep quality. We will discuss the recent Blinded Placebo Controlled Randomized Trial that our team completed through funding from the National Institute Of Aging where we showed that when a trained psychologist uses this technology to enhance the recommended treatment for insomnia, it is safe and can make the intervention more effective. If you are a practitioner who wants to learn more about activating sleep solutions for your clients or just someone that wants to improve their sleep quality, you will want to attend this free lecture! Thank you Lee A. Surkin, MD, MS, FACC, FCCP, FASNC, FAASM for organizing this and I look forward to the discussion with the community of doctors and psychologists at AACSM!
