A great lesson in the importance of circularity, sustainability, and the connected nature of things...

About two years ago, I wrote to Dove consumer's channel to ask for solid shampoos and conditioners. I also tried to contact Unilever to convince them that solid shampoos, conditioners, and beauty bars (soap) would be a perfect match for Brazilian consumers. Even though they gave me kind feedback, nothing changed! And here we are, with more plastic polluting our planet and our bodies every day. The other companies selling "sustainable products" with biodegradable ingredients and paper packaging are, in general, too expensive and only sell online. Now, if we stop to think about the carbon footprint from all this one-client transportation, it becomes clear that we need a gigantic company like Dove to start the process of substituting shampoo bottles with shampoo bars, in compostable packaging. In Brazil, the beauty bars from Dove come in little paper boxes (that can be improved to be compostable), but we need way more #ClimateAction than this. So, Unilever, be the change in the world. Brands can’t be everything to everyone. They choose their purpose, what they want to communicate and who they want to communicate that to. And a brand like Dove has done exactly that by focusing on challenging perceptions surrounding beauty with their Real Beauty campaign, speaking to young girls and women alike. Global Recycling Day is today, and it’s our chance to really do something cool for our planet. Trust me, every little bit of recycling we do add up to a massive win for Mother Earth. 🌍♻️ Let me break it down for you with a bit of what I’ve learned - and, okay, a bit of humor because recycling lists don’t have to be boring! So, here’s the scoop on what you can toss into that recycle bin: - Paper (Yep, even your old homework!) - Cardboard (All those online shopping boxes? Recycle 'em!) - Glass bottles (After your fancy dinner party, perhaps?) - Aluminum cans (Soda, beer, you name it!) - Plastic bottles (Just make sure they’re empty, okay?) Now, onto the no-go zone. Here's what you definitely shouldn’t recycle: - Styrofoam (I know, it’s a bummer.) - Plastic bags (Just reuse them or get yourself a stylish tote!) - Batteries (These guys need special treatment.) - Light bulbs (Also not in the bin, please.) - Food waste (Compost if you can, it’s awesome for your garden!) How do you address plastic pollution in something as vast as the ocean? Tetra Tech plays a central role in the global fight to reduce the estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic that flow into the ocean each year. Since 2019 we have served as the implementing partner for Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO), USAID’s global flagship program to address ocean plastic pollution under the Save our Seas Initiative. Yet another global corporation walking back on its promise to limit its environmental impact. The problem with these voluntary "pledges" is they're so easy to make because ultimately you have no obligation to actually follow through on them! When Unilever origianally made these pledges they got to bask in all the positive PR that came with it, but now just get to quietly walk them back hopefully without too many people noticing. This guardian article hints at something I think we've known all along, big corporations are either unable or unwilling to make the changes needed to curb environmental catastrophe when it will hurt their profitibility. The problem is that because companies like Unilever are so big and have such a huge impact on the environment, our fate is largely in their hands. If they dont curb their impact it negates all the efforts we as individuals make. Saving the planet will never be profitable so it shouldnt be left to companies whose first priority is financial gains!

June is Pride Month, and for years I've cringed at the beginning of summer as some companies exploit this fact for shameless self-promotion. Along with the rainbow colours, let's not forget the monochromatic practices companies like to use, such as #pinkwashing and #greenwashing. I often wonder how we got to this point. Behind each of these practices is a quality idea with good intentions, but somehow through consumerism we have turned it into a mockery of the original idea. The behaviour of brands during June has already become a walking meme in recent years, while pinkwashing and greenwashing have only recently come to light. From pinkwashing to greenwashing, companies use various deceptive tactics to obscure or mitigate the negative impact of their actions. 🩰 Pinkwashing is a form of corporate hand-washing where a company or organisation presents itself as supporting the breast cancer cause while simultaneously manufacturing products that are linked to an increased risk of the disease. 🚛 On the other hand, greenwashing involves companies portraying an environmentally friendly image to mask their environmentally damaging activities. For instance, an oil company might launch an advertising campaign emphasising its commitment to sustainability while continuing to engage in environmentally destructive drilling practices. 🌊 Another way companies engage in hand-washing is through #bluewashing, where they attempt to present themselves as socially responsible and ethical, often through philanthropic endeavours, to conceal unethical labour practices or human rights violations within their supply chains. This happens when a company promotes its charitable contributions while turning a blind eye to exploitative labour conditions in its overseas factories. Overall, these deceptive hand-washing tactics highlight the importance of scrutinising corporate behaviour and holding companies accountable for their actions. Let's move beyond the superficial gestures and rainbow-washing. We, as consumers, hold the power to demand genuine action. By understanding and recognizing these practices, consumers, activists, and policymakers can demand transparency, ethical practices, and genuine social and environmental responsibility from corporations.   We can support companies with demonstrably inclusive practices and environmentally sound policies, we can turn Pride Month and environmental movements back into what they were originally intended to be: powerful forces for positive change.
