In this short video, my colleague Kristian Assirati chat through some of the key issues facing our clients, and think about what further developments we might see in the near future. #sanctions #compliance #DisputeResolution #DisputesWeek #ofsi

Russia hoping to use #INSTC to evade sanctions, says think tank According to the US-based think tank The Jamestown Foundation, Russia hopes to use the International North-South #TransportCorridor (INSTC) as a way to evade Western sanctions. The development of the #corridor allows Russia to gain more open access to non-Western markets. Those could provide #Russia with much-needed goods for its war economy. https://lnkd.in/dcyPCTdH

The US is further targeting the Russian Military-Industrial Base with over 300 designations against companies and individuals. It is interesting to observe that the US sanctions focus has remained on legal entities rather than individuals for a year, illustrating a trend in how the US perceives the most effective strategy to halt sanctions circumvention schemes. Two years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it is becoming increasingly clear that further expansion of sanctions regimes will be met with strong opposition from governments whose economies would suffer direct consequences, or who are trying to take an independent path in global politics. Controls Risks’ bi-annual report, Navigating the Global Sanctions Landscape in 2024 is back for a third time, providing insight into the complexities of today's ongoing sanctions regimes: from technical expertise on the movement of goods, to the geopolitics driving changing sanctions regimes. My thoughts on Russia sanctions, enforcement difficulties and policy tradeoffs - on John Dickerson's prime time news on CBS on Wednesday night. - US/G7 sanctions have had an impact on Russia's economy, increasing costs, but choices in types of sanctions, enforcement challenges and Russian policy choices limited effect. Plus Russia has been successful in creating webs of illicit and semi-licit supply chains and reorienting economy around war economy. - highlights challenges of targeting a major fuel producer, but also potential missed opportunity of active enforcement of price cap for 2nd half of last year. - sanctions and Russian choices have done more to undermine longer-term economic/investment opportunity. - What am I watching? Secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions. We are still waiting to see full impact of the enforcement and signaling that began towards end of 2023.
How effective are sanctions on Russia?
