Dissecting the pervasive #culturalimpact of the #Bravonetwork, this article highlights the channel's evolution from a highbrow arts channel to a seminal arbiter of #realityTV. The author argues that society is experiencing a "Bravo-ification," wherein reality TV's dynamics parallel real-life social interactions and self-perception. READ: https://lnkd.in/gDUqmYMb

After our most recent WGA and SAG strike it seems like reality programming is taking over. You can't throw a rock without hitting a Real Housewife or a 90 Day Fiancé (Note - I am not advocating throwing rocks at anyone). I recently took a deep dive into our viewership data to see what kind of reality programming Spectrum households were watching both on traditional TV and streaming in Q2 and things certainly have changed since 7 strangers were picked to live in a loft in 1992. True Crime content continues to rack in the viewers but the biggest surprise to me?? Ridiculousness on MTV. If you have a teenager you know that short-form content is usually the base of their media food-pyramid. Ridiculousness is an entire television program dedicated to watching short-form viral videos and reacting to them...and viewers can't get enough. It blends the popularity of social content with the communal big-screen viewing experience of television. Who knew? (Apparently everyone but me).

Founder and CEO of ROAR Forward. Former President/Publishing Director, Hearst Magazines. Bestselling Author of ROAR Into the Second Half of Your Life.
Who are the writers, producers, directors and studio heads that recognize the huge potential in creating movies and series for the 50+ audience? With actors and actresses over 50? There are some enlightened pioneers like Amy Baer and a few others like Ryan Murphy who just announced his new series Mid-Century Modern. (With Linda Lavin, Nathan Lane and others). And Susan Stroman who will produce Left on Tenth on Broadway. I’m happy to learn that my esquire story below on the topic is now part of some film/media studies curriculum. The first millennials turn 50 in six years. Maybe they will be the enlightened generation who lean into this idea as opposed to being age-phobic. By the way, it’s good for business. #ROAR into this big opportunity.

The new reality of old media Cable TV was a perfect storm. The number of channels that needed old movies and TV series to fill airtime almost exactly matched the number of worthwhile shows that were available. Which meant that A Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, Seinfeld and MASH could be cornerstones of the culture for decades, not simply a few weeks or months. A fan could reasonably expect to see them all. Two things have changed for books, music and visual media: Shelf space and broadcast schedules disappeared. There’s room for everything, all the time. The cost of creating and publishing work in any of these media has dropped to zero. When anyone can make a video or a song, anyone will. The long tail keeps getting longer. Which is fine, except it undermines our expectation that the culture has a center, that the people you’re with have seen and read what you’ve seen and read. And it shifts the economics as well. Assets aren’t worth what they used to be, and the focus of attention is erratic and unpredictable. Better is elusive, more is not in short supply and it’s even more of a guessing game than it used to be. - Seth Godin

Is 'wokenomics' negatively impacting the television industry? There's a growing debate around this topic. Critics suggest that the focus on social justice issues is leading to a decline in the quality of content, with actors being fired for their views and shows and movies being heavily influenced by 'woke culture'. A study from UCLA even suggests that the new generation's preference for issues-related content could threaten the future of TV and movies. Yet, could this shift be merely reflecting the changing societal norms and values? A natural progression the media landscape has always done? What are your thoughts? #TVIndustry #Wokenomics #MediaTrends
