Deepening technological involvement between the three AUKUS partner nations is a key aim of the AUKUS pact with joint work between Australia and the United States escalating over summer, writes Peter Roberts. Work is underway between the two nations on at least three areas – submarine development, hypersonics and the development of autonomous vehicle systems for defence use. Australia and the US have worked together on hypersonic research for at least 15 years, in 2017 completing the Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation, or HiFiRE programme (pictured) which involved a series of flight tests at speeds above Mach 5. In 2020 the joint Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment, SCIFiRE, was launched aiming to develop a Mach 5 precision strike missile powered by an air-breathing scramjet engine. BREAKING XQ-67A first flight footage released. The Air Force Research Laboratory successfully flew the first of a second- generation of Autonomous Collaborative Platforms known as the XQ-67A demonstrator, built and flown in the Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) program Feb. 28, 2024. The AFRL Off-Board Sensing Station program is the validation of a design, build and test process that has resulted in the XQ-67A. It is the first of its kind to be built on a common chassis or genus — much like that of a motor vehicle frame — and with its first successful flight, the XQ-67A is proof that the genus approach works. This enables a faster and more cost-effective replication of the aircraft. This new approach also responds to the challenge of great power competition by speeding delivery of affordable, advanced capabilities to the warfighter. The XQ-67A is remotely piloted but is capable of autonomous flight. Australia and Japan have signed an agreement to enhance strategic capabilities in robotic and autonomous systems for undersea warfare. The research project between Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) is the first under a bilateral research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) arrangement signed in June, 2023. Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro AC said that maintaining a technological edge in our rapidly changing strategic environment was vital. “This is the first collaborative research project to be conducted as part of the bilateral research, development, test and evaluation arrangement I signed with my Japanese counterpart last year. “It illustrates the increasingly strong defence science and technology relationship shared by Australia and Japan. 🇺🇦The war in Ukraine is the first recent conflict between two large and relatively advanced armies to widely deploy electronic warfare abilities and evolve the techniques in real time. 🎙️Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a think tank in Washington: “Electronic warfare has impacted the fighting in Ukraine as much as weather and terrain.” ✔️A battle is raging in Ukraine in the invisible realm of electromagnetic waves, with radio signals being used to overwhelm communication links to drones and troops, locate targets and trick guided weapons. 🟦 Boeing #Corporation and the Ukrainian company Antonov have signed a preliminary #MOU on joint production of #drones in #Ukraine. The document, published on #Boeing's #website, outlines areas of potential #cooperation, including #training, #logistics #support and repair of tactical drones, including #ScanEagle.
