I am delighted to share with you the policy brief that Kalliopi Kotsareli and I co-authored and published in the Hellenic Association of Political Scientists (ΕΟΠΕ - HAPSc). The title of the policy brief is "European Health Data Space: a new era in EU Health". The policy brief demonstrates the role of the European Health Data Space as a pillar of the European Health Union. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need to strengthen and create stronger health systems with the EU developing the initiative for a European Health Union. The digitalisation of health is a key to creating resilient health systems and the adoption of the European Health Data Space Regulation will be a crucial step. The policy brief concludes with the need for an immediate adoption of the proposed EHDS Regulation, which will contribute to improving healthcare provision while completing the single internal market and achieving the free circulation of health data. I would like to thank the Hellenic Association of Political Scientists (ΕΟΠΕ - HAPSc) for the evaluation and publication of this policy brief and Kalliopi Kotsareli for for the excellent cooperation and fruitful research. You can read and download the policy brief from the following link: https://lnkd.in/d4gu5yqi

Physician | Healthcare research, policy + systems. Working toward a future filled with healthier people on a healthier and fairer planet
💥 #Misinformation and #Disinformation threatens progress toward the #sustainabledevelopmentgoals and any progress on health outcomes 💥 💥 Without investing time, energy and resources in tackling health misinformation and disinformation the work of many health institutions is likely to be far less impactful than hoped. 💫 At The Lancet we've been thinking a lot about this topic and how our content fits into the broader picture, what we can do to prevent misuse of our content, and how we can combat health misinformation and disinformation. We've been thinking this through with an extraordinary group of colleagues Siân Crucefix Ursula Hofer Chloe Wilson Hugh Thomas Tim Dehnel and more. Here's a reflection of some of our conversations and progress: https://lnkd.in/eVsFZbVK I got into health research, policy and knowledge generation because I wanted to use that platform to build bridges, to collaborate and advance the health of people and planet. It worries me deeply how complex and challenging it is to do that in the current information ecosystem

Our new paper, led by PhD student Meghan Meredith, is now online at BMC Health Services Research: https://lnkd.in/eusz35PP In this paper, we examine measures of geographic access to obstetric care and ask whether they are useful for measuring progress and planning action. Some of the takeaways: * We highlight some drawbacks of current county-based measures, like the "Maternity Care Desert." This measure has flaws, especially when measuring access in a state like Georgia which has a large number of small counties: 1. County-based measures don't necessarily capture distance to obstetric care. 82% of reproductive-aged women who live in Maternity Care Deserts in Georgia live within 25 miles of obstetric care. 2. Georgia would need a 67% increase in obstetric facilities to eliminate Maternity Care Deserts in Georgia. This would require a dramatic increase in workforce and could potentially dilute volume among obstetric facilities. Therefore, it is not clear if eliminating maternity care deserts is a realistic or desirable goal. * Current distance-based measures also have their drawbacks since they typically focus on distance to one "type" of obstetric care (e.g., critical care). This paper points to the need for better ways to evaluate and plan action to improve the accessibility of high-quality, risk-appropriate obstetric care.

Physician | Healthcare research, policy + systems. Working toward a future filled with healthier people on a healthier and fairer planet
An interesting high level discussion hosted by EUPHA - European Public Health Association and European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies with WHO Regional Office for Europe Hans Kluge on "Is public health relevant in the new world?" The short answer is...of course! Hard to disagree with anything that was said. But I will say this. There seems to be an overemphasis on improving communication in public health without sufficient acknowledgement of the many forces that are countering that communication. In a post-COVID world where we have seen the impact of misinformation and disinformation, it doesn't matter how well you communicate something, there will be a group of people who are uninterested and unpersuaded by scientific facts and rational argument. We need to move to evidence based interventions that tackle disinformation and misinformation. Without that we are hanging onto a concept of health uniting people, when what we see around the world is health dividing people.
