Three months into our new strategic plan, and check! Progress being made. Like most strategic plans, the proof's in the pudding. Plans aren't made to sit on a shelf. I'm super proud of the OHS team, who's making sure that doesn't happen. One of the pillars of the new strategic plan is to provide more second changes for all animals - and our community was pretty specific: they're concerned about homeless cats. On this Juneteenth, let's also shed light on a lesser-known bias issue: Black Dog Syndrome. Black pets are often overlooked in shelters due to superstitions and biases, much like the prejudice we've fought against for generations. Today, let's pledge to see the beauty and love in every animal, regardless of their color. Adopt, foster, and advocate for black pets and help break the cycle of discrimination. September Is National Service Dog Month! National Service Dog Month is a month-long celebration honoring the hard work and life-changing impact service dogs make on people with disabilities every day. A service dog is a dog that has been individually trained to perform work or tasks to assist a person with a disability. Only service dogs and their handlers are allowed in public places where pet dogs aren’t allowed. When untrained pets or poorly trained service or emotional support dogs are in public places where they aren’t allowed, it has a real impact on people with disabilities and the trained service dogs they rely on for independence. 80% report that poorly-trained dogs have negatively impacted independence and quality of life. 🐾 Visit Canine Companions® Service Dog Month page to learn more: canine.org/servicedogmonth
