I am happy that our work to encourage industrial ocean data sharing is gaining momentum. Today, HUB Ocean and PGS announced their collaboration around sharing data in compliance with the FAIR principles. FAIR stands for Findable – Accessible – Interoperable and Reusable.   There has been an exponential increase in the number and variety of ocean observing systems, such as research vessels, buoys, satellites, and sensors that gather essential data. Industries are sitting on enormous amounts of data. At the same time, researchers are telling us that significant data gaps hinder our understanding of the environment. Insight through data is the base for ocean governance and policies. Let us work together to unlock more data that will give value to the scientific community, which, in return, will give value back by better insight for the good of the ocean. #oceandecade #oceandata

Today, we are thrilled to tell you about our signing of an agreement for industrial ocean data sharing with the global geophysical company PGS! The focus of the collaboration is to enhance PGS' operations and advance ocean science. The collaboration between PGS and HUB Ocean is based on HUB Ocean's Ocean Data Platform (ODP) and PGS' extensive ocean data contributions to facilitate scientific collaboration with the intention to develop Use Cases and derive valuable insights to support the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life below water. “We are very proud to present our work in sharing data and our first use case at UN's Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona in April. We hope to inspire other companies to get involved in sharing data to support SDG14", said Sandy Spørck, SVP Sustainability & Quality in PGS The first defined Use Case focuses on integrating marine biota with additional oceanographic data from the waters off Brazil to better understand marine mammal distribution patterns along Brazil's coastline. PGS can use improved predictions of mammal presence to optimize seismic data acquisition, allowing them to avoid unplanned stoppages due to marine mammal observations. “HUB Ocean is delighted to partner with PGS, a progressive industry player that demonstrates transparency in its sector and commitment to ocean health.  It is exciting to see what the combination of industrial and open data sources can do for science, said Kimberly Mathisen, CEO of HUB Ocean. #Seagrass is one of the Biology and Ecosystem Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs). We are excited to share a recent publication on 100 priority questions to advance seagrass research, monitoring, and conservation in Europe published in Plants, People, Planet. The paper points out the way to enhance seagrass conservation and the need for a collaborative approach across regions and expertise, as well as the need for interoperable and open data. The paper is led by #BioEcoOcean Project Coordinator and Associate Professor Lina Mtwana Nordlund and Associate Professor Richard Unsworth and was initiated under the #EuroSea project in collaboration with the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), IOC-UNESCO. The 100 priority questions were identified by 37 seagrass experts across 18 European countries. “We as a research community believe that answering these 100 priority questions will place European seagrasses on a positive trajectory of recovery and accelerate seagrass conservation” says Lina Mtwana Nordlund. A month ago, I had the honour of delivering a keynote at the 39th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Limnology (DGL), hosted by the Institute of Hydrobiology at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. The DGL is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! My talk, titled "Non-perennial Rivers in South Africa: Unpredictable, Highly Variable, and Often Misunderstood," explored some of the distinguishing characteristics of non-perennial rivers as well as challenges in assessing the ecological integrity and environmental water requirements of these rivers. As climate change progresses, its impact on river flow is likely to increase with some perennial rivers experiencing intermittent flow, shifting their regimes towards the episodic end of the hydrological continuum. By drawing on existing knowledge of non-perennial rivers, we can better guide river flow management in the future.

Last week, our Research Fellow Loes Verdonk travelled all the way to the island of Vilm in the German Baltic Sea to participate in the ValuGaps Summer School on Economic Valuation of Natural Capital: From Theory to Practice.   The Summer School was an initiative by ValuGaps, together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BfN), Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency (UBA), and German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. It was aimed at PhD candidates, early career PostDocs and researchers to deepen their knowledge on both the theory and practical application of various economic methods for biodiversity and natural capital valuation🌿   "During this intensive program, I improved my understanding of natural capital and ecosystem services valuation more than I could have imagined. We delved into so many key topics in combatting the natural capital degradation and biodiversity crises we are facing today:''   🟢Ecosystem Services Valuation: Current trends and future directions 🟢Ecosystem Services: Quantifying them with ecological models 🟢Health and Wellbeing: The link between greenspace exposure and human health 🟢Practical Applications: From the use of the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database (ESVD) to integrating ecosystem services valuation in policy contexts   A heartfelt thank you to ValuGaps for their impeccable organization and engaging learnings. Special thanks to the BfN, and all the experts and fellow participants who shared their knowledge on this crucial matter! This #TechTuesday, scientists are seeing red because the configurable aft deck on R/V Falkor (too) allows them to bring just the right tools for meeting their scientific objectives. During the #OxygenMinimumMicrobes expedition, the Chilean science team brought a customized mobile laboratory built for oceanographic studies; it allows researchers to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. For example, water can be pumped directly into the portable lab using a pump profiling system for continuous high-resolution measurements of things like nutrients in the water. Dim red light is needed to work with light-sensitive microbes, such as phytoplankton because it possesses lower energy compared to white light or light of shorter wavelengths. Red light facilitates the setup of experiments in which microbes will be exposed to specific light intensities, and it is maintained at a very low intensity to minimize photosynthetic activity during the experiment setup. To characterize the microorganisms living in Oxygen Minimum Zones, or OMZs, in the Ocean, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Microbiologist and Expedition Chief Scientist Dr. Maria Pachiadaki and her team are testing new instruments in the Eastern Tropical Pacific OMZ. Data collected during this expedition will help create better regional models to predict what will happen to OMZs as the climate changes.
