🌊 Urgent Call for Ocean Data Sharing 🌍
📑 Our new report, Tides of Transparency, reveals a critical gap in global ocean biodiversity data: only 3% comes from the private sector. 🌱 As industries like offshore wind, oil and gas, continue to expand, their role in protecting ocean health has never been more important. As the ocean plays a crucial role in climate action, it’s time for industries to step up, share their data, and help close the knowledge gaps. Link to report in comments! 👇
Key findings from the report include:
📊 Only 3% of global ocean biodiversity data is contributed by private companies.
🌍 Norway leads globally due to its mandatory data-sharing policies, while countries like Namibia, Portugal, Japan, and Colombiashow higher-than-average contributions.
🔋 Huge opportunity: With the rapid growth of offshore industries, particularly wind energy, there's vast potential to increase data sharing, enhancing marine conservation and sustainable management.
💹 The report showcases companies like Ecowende, Equinor, Aker BP ASA , TGS, TotalEnergies, PTTEP and Aker BioMarine ASA , which highlight the benefits of sharing industrial ocean data. By participating in open data-sharing, several of these companies have gained competitive advantages and improved operations, inspiring others to follow their lead.
🙏 "We are making meaningful progress. We have chosen to focus on ocean biodiversity in this report, as we have heard - loud and clear - that there is a critical gap in data felt by science, governments, and industry alike. I encourage companies to get engaged”, said Kjell Inge Røkke, UN Ocean Decade Special Emissary of Industrial Ocean Data.
🌍 "Both industry and national governments have a major role to play, working together to establish pathways that facilitate data sharing and benefit both stakeholders equally," says Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
🌱 "The private sector can and must play a pivotal role in filling the current gaps in our understanding of marine ecosystems," says Kimberly Mathisen, CEO of HUB Ocean. "With the growing footprint of industries in the ocean, there is a critical need for these sectors to step up and contribute more data to help preserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable ocean management."
Under the leadership of HUB Ocean and with input from the UN Ocean Decade's Corporate Data Group, the Ocean Data Action Coalition (ODAC) has produced the report 'Tides of Transparency: A First Mapping of Industrial Ocean Data Sharing. ODAC is an actiongroup under the auspices of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, and consists of HUB Ocean, Microsoft and Accenture.
Let’s follow up by make ocean data sharing Open by Design for a sustainable future. 🐋
