Hello 👋 LinkedIn 🤩 Do you make a habit of greeting people ? I recall a time when I was asked to drop off a package for a shop owner nearby, but when I arrived, the person wasn’t there. Fortunately, there was a woman I always greeted in passing, and when I greeted her that day, she was quick to offer her help. It struck me—had I always ignored her, she might not have been so willing. As the saying goes, "A simple greeting is the seed of goodwill," and "You never know when a small kindness will come full circle." Even if you think you’ll never need their help, it’s wise to remember that "no one is an island." It's a New week full of opportunities,the answer to your question might be in the hand of that person you've been avoiding. Send that message,initiate that call, check on that person. [Freestyling on my way to work] Second Chance Month is always a powerful solidarity lifting up the importance of meeting people where they are. It is important to go deeper in our understanding of (a) what it means to meet people where they are, even if it isn't as comfortable and neat of a definition as we would like, and (b) the #value of meeting people where they are. There are many definitions of meeting people where they are. I will give you maybe an underrepresented perspective. Meeting people where they are at means understanding that person you choose to engage in whatever prosocial activity (employment, partnership, marriage, education), given their personal context, may have a ceiling that is less desirable for the role/situation but you work to support them and include them in not only the status quo but future of whatever business, initiative, project you are pursuing together. This is because you understand the value of that person participating not only to your engagement but the value of that person participating to your community and society (check my post on how we should be more like ants). The value, and this is the humanity piece, is that each person, each soul, who has the opportunity to participate at a level higher than where they are currently, especially if that involves a jump from not being involved (transitioning back to normal society) to being involved (employing formerly incarcerated), increases the chances of healthier families, communities in the future. The next generation starts on a higher platform. And that's the only way we can truly work towards safety, justice, and peace in this world. 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸? 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 🎁 Our Founder shares her mindset “work-in-progress” with this: “As a parent juggling kids and a business, the holiday hustle can leave me feeling frazzled. Last Friday was a prime example as our household juggled work deadlines and coordinating multiple kid pickups from activities. One of my daughters attended a gift exchange at her friend Sophia’s house. Her mom texted to organize logistics. When Sophia’s mom kindly offered to drive my daughter (and the other 3 girls attending) home afterward, my first reaction was resistance. 💭 My first thought: 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. I wasn’t the only one with this attitude, as was reflected in the parent group text for this event. But in that moment (and before responding to the text), I paused. 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜’𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲. I also know I’m not alone in this tendency. 🚨If you pride yourself on getting stuff done, or have ever thought to yourself, “If I want it done right, I need to do it myself,” you likely also have a history of brushing aside or neglecting to ask for help. I’m working on my willingness to receive help without feeling like I must do it all solo. And so I texted to Sophia’s mom: “That would be great - thank you!” and she brought my daughter home that night.” As STEM professionals (and especially when we are in leadership roles), we sometimes perpetuate the myth that we can handle everything ourselves. But openly receiving is critical for healthy relationships in all areas of our lives. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.
