At Nacro, we believe that rehabilitation must be at the heart of an effective justice system. And that for people who enter the criminal justice system it should be the start of building something better, not a road to nowhere. For people coming out of prison, having a job is vital to start rebuilding their lives. However, 70% of people remain unemployed six months after they leave prison. To ensure more people who leave prison are able to find work, prisons need to give people the support, training and experience to set them up to get a job when they get out. There are some good training and employment schemes in prison, but it remains the case that only about half of people in prison are in employment or training. And often the work that people do in prison does not prepare them for work in the outside world. This is a wasted opportunity for rehabilitation. #WastingTime

Want to know how to have a society that focuses on rehabilitation and prisoner reform? Look at Norway. Our reoffending rates are at almost 70% . Their reoffending rate is 20%. Norway is a country that focuses on real rehabilitation. We need to be more like Norway. My passion on this is so high, but the results are undeniable. Zero escapes, four suicides in a decade. No prison guards, but social workers who work as prison staff. Education, qualifications and employment while in the prison. Welcomed and treated like a human. Able to have overnight visits with their children after completing programs. Private visits. No solitary cells without interactions. No bars. There are windows everywhere and an ability to leave the prison and return after engaging in work or study.. Our prison system does not work. Our tough-on-crime neoliberal society doesn't work. Stop with the short sentencing. Stop with the criminogenic policies. Create better people, not better criminals. https://lnkd.in/gJNAHCXK

📊 Yesterday's data showed the number of times people were let out on day release from prison (ROTL), mainly used for work, rose by 9% in the past year. Making sure everyone who is eligible for ROTL is given the opportunity is a key ask in our #WastingTime campaign. The campaign calls for better work opportunities for those in prison with 3 key objectives for the improvement of the quality of work within prison: 1️⃣ People must be provided with a working pattern that, as far as is possible, mimics the working day on the outside. 2️⃣ People in prison can be paid less than £10 per week. We want to see a national pay scale for people in prison. 3️⃣ It needs to become the norm that all people in prison who are eligible have genuine opportunities to be released during the day. As professionals dedicated to innovation and social impact, it's crucial to explore successful global models that challenge conventional approaches. Norway's prison system offers profound lessons in rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, underlining the power of treating individuals with dignity and humanity. Norway boasts one of the lowest recidivism rates globally—20% within two years of release. This achievement is attributed to a system prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment, focusing on education, skill-building, and maintaining strong family connections. Prisons, designed to mimic societal living conditions, offer resources ranging from educational programs to professional training, facilitating a smoother reintegration into society. #CriminalJusticeReform #Rehabilitation #SocialImpact #Innovation

Overcrowding prison crisis :the recent headlines are nothing new we have seen this many times in past 20years or more. There is a huge financial cost to incarceration and yet little invention or resource is applied in reducing sentence lengths by appropriate means,or avoiding wherever possible the imposition of such sentences. There is no coherant approach to the concept of avoiding time spent locked up. The system is rudderless and archaic and in desperate need of reform. New ideas are needed and old ones that worked that have been rejected through political dogma to be revisited - Deferred sentences, suspended sentences, compensation, longer licences and the ending of the madness of IPP sentences would make radical inroads to the appalling prison overcrowding-I wager we see old army camps (yet again)and retired cruise ships as the solution!!

April is Second Chance Month, a time to raise awareness about the barriers faced by returning citizens. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Second Chance Act, which aims to reduce recidivism and promote successful reintegration (https://lnkd.in/e7vQDY8b). An eye-opening documentary I recommend on the topic of what incarcerated life is like is the hyperlocal 'Prison of Terror' (https://lnkd.in/eD7EbjtG). Yes, it's graphic. It's a great month to commit to supporting organizations that assist returning citizens, like Thrive DC. Journalism that covers the prison system is important, too: Solitary Watch | Shining Light into the Darkest Corners of the U.S. Punishment System.

Unfortunately many of these new spaces are as a result of “doubling up “ of cells, ie, bunk beds, two people in a space designed for one. Increasing capacity in such a manner is fraught with potential for violence, large scale disturbances and unrest, especially given that there will almost certainly be no commensurate increase in the number of prison officers as recruitment and retention is a huge problem. Another factor to be considered is where new buildings are being constructed they are on existing sites which all are plagued by the constant trafficking of drugs, phones and weapons via drones and “throw overs”. We need to have a mature conversation as a first world society as to what we want our criminal justice system and especially our Prison Service to achieve. The sticking plaster approach needs to stop because it doesn’t achieve its intended aim and is hugely expensive for the taxpayer.
This all feels very mid 1990s. ‘Revolving door’; ‘We have a plan to grow the size of our prison estate for the first time in a decade’. The late 2000s and 2010s were spent trying to fix the problems this type of approach created. https://lnkd.in/etqsDdsp

8moI worked for the NCS in prison for a number of years and worked on the trial of the Inspiration in Custody project. It was a great success. Then the Ministry of Justice decided that prisoners and ex offenders didn’t need careers advice and made us all redundant.
