Democratic norms are being constantly attacked these days - internationally, federally, provincially and at the municipal level. More than ever, those threats are powerful and relentless. Authoritarian leaders, disinformation, misinformation, censorship, economic change and inequality, and political lobbying are at this very moment working to take away your rights and your voice. If we want to continue to have the democratic rights that we have been so proud of, and for which many before us have sacrificed, we need to to challenge the trends. Our challenge must be rooted in our communities, and we need to constantly connect across this great country and internationally. We must start to work no only to defend our democracy, we need to constantly fight to improve it. The attached podcast paints a most disturbing picture of lobbying in Canada.

Westerners have a great deal of ignorance about China and Chinese politics. This ignorance is based on their political bigotry, on their devotion to Western political ideals and values. Chinese politics is quite different from Western politics and therefore, as far as they're concerned, it's bad and wrong. Westerners' view and understanding of Chinese politics are so simplistic and narrow that they miss all the nuances. They don't see how the government is very attentive to its citizens — it listens and responds to the people. They don't see the range and diversity of political views in China. They don't understanding the electoral process. All they see is a one-party state and therefore it's not democratic. Westerners criticise China when people are arrested for breaking the law, as if this doesn't happen in the West. They don't like Chinese laws but will not admit that there are Western laws they don't like. Westerners are totally obsessed with "free speech" but free speech exists in China as well. Everywhere in the world, free speech has limitations and restrictions. For example, free speech does not entitle you to incite violence and insurrection, to cause public disorder, to spew hate speech, to make physical or verbal threats, to defame others, etc. When Westerners hear about someone arrested in China for what they perceive as free speech violation, they immediately criticise the Chinese government, not understanding that the government has a responsibility to maintain order, 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩.

Really fascinating discussion. Such insightful interviews from this podcast. Check it out.
The Realignment of South African Politics In this episode, Bronwyn Williams speaks to journalist and author Mandy Wiener about South Africa’s ever-evolving political situation. How unified is our government of national unity? How binding are the agreements between the ANC and its GNU partners? What stops Ramaphosa from changing his cabinet at will? They also discuss how the realignment of South African politics impacts the country’s investability, whether our politics should be held hostage by market forces, the false dichotomy between a country’s economy and its people, the historical context behind many South Africans’ resistance towards having the DA in government, why political parties choose such mediocre men to represent them, the parallels between SA politics and the US, and why our current political turmoil may be a sign of a maturing democracy. https://lnkd.in/ddqSxxY9

End Justin Trudeau's Iron Curtain. A message from the Conservative Party of Canada. #trudeaumustgo This is unacceptable. After 8 years of Justin Trudeau, citizens and journalists who disagree with him are being censored and arrested. A Canadian journalist who attempted to ask questions of the Deputy Prime Minister was abruptly and forcefully arrested on trumped-up charges. This is Canada. In 2024. After 8 years of Trudeau. Freedom of the press is being buried by the Trudeau government and state-controlled media. Trudeau has divided the media into 2 camps: those he’s bought off with bailouts and those he has censored and arrested. This is a dangerous trend. End the Liberal iron curtain of censorship and help Pierre bring home freedom of the press. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are fundamental to a free and democratic Canada. While Trudeau and his Liberal government continue to curtail Canadians’ rights and freedoms, Conservatives are fighting around the clock to reverse their harmful policies. Only a Conservative government will restore freedom of the press and end Liberal censorship. Are you with us? SIGN HERE!

Australia, a nation forged by migrants (myself included) fleeing war, conflict, and poverty now grappling with significant labour shortages and a housing crisis, which is polarizing views. There's no denying that migrants have been and will continue to be integral to the solution. Watch IOMs new DG, deliver an inspiring address to the Australian Press Club and the encouraging followup questions by journalists probing these issues. Hopefully, more nuanced perspectives will follow to foster a broader, less politicized debate aimed at comprehensive solutions to the migration challenges we face today- https://lnkd.in/gr5ZFUtv
