The UK’s oldest rose-growing company is closing down… What can this tell us about family-run businesses? Cants of Colchester have been selling roses since all the way back in 1765. But, now, the company, which is run by three siblings in their eighties, is making its final ever sales before it shuts up shop for good. Age is not the only reason for the closure. In fact, there seems to be a combination of things which have contributed to the decision. Soaring trading prices, the falling popularity of roses as a plant to grow in the garden and the directors’ children’s lack of desire to take over the business have all played a part. This got me thinking… How do we know when it’s the right time to close a family business? And, will we see many more historical businesses closing their doors? The LSU100: Fast Growing Tiger Business (LSU100) identifies, recognizes, and celebrates the 100 fastest growing Tiger-owned and Tiger-led businesses globally. The LSU ROARING20 recognizes the 20 highest revenue-generating LSU graduate-owned or graduate-led businesses from all those that apply for the LSU100 each year. Companies must meet all four of the following application criteria: 1. The company must have been in business for five years or more as of December 31, 2023. 2. The company’s revenues must have been $100,000 or more in each of the calendar years from 2021 – 2023. 3.
