On just listening as an academic leader and colleague. As an association president and then senior editor, I learned the best way to help angry members and upset authors was to just listen. Most often, they knew that I could not fix the problem. Most often, they needed to be heard and to know someone cared. Most often, they wanted to know that their opinions and experiences mattered. When I no longer held those roles, my best academic friendships were formed with people whom I listened to and let them know they mattered. I’ve carried that lesson into my post-leadership life, taking time to listen to students, respond to emails from strangers about my papers or university, and let people know they mattered in my job. If you have not, simply give listening a try. You will find it improves your academic life and, more importantly, the lives of the people around you. #academiclife

Attention, fellow independent speechwriters! Are you tired of setting pricing for your work in an information vacuum? Let's talk (anonymously, of course) about how we charge, what we get, and how we feel about it! The Professional Speechwriters Association is looking into the economics of independent speechwriting, and they need to hear from YOU (independent speechwriters and anyone for whom independent speechwriting is a part of your work). The survey is quick to take; the information it gleans could change our industry. Results will be revealed at the 2024 PSA World Conference next month, and I will facilitate a discussion about the results. Soon after, PSA will share it with the world. Please contribute your data ... and forward to anyone else who ought to weigh in. https://lnkd.in/eWhe6vqa
