Can cooperative business models help energize a different kind of digital economy, where transparency, active governance and financial returns for users are "baked in" from the start? Project Liberty Institute and the Decentralization Research Center --- along with more than dozen thought-leaders and practitioners -- are tackling this question head-on. Dig into our initial report and stay tuned for more!
In a digital age, addressing inequities in data ownership and governance is crucial to ensuring individuals and communities have a voice, choice, and stake in the economy. This initial report from The Project Liberty Institute sets the agenda for an in-depth exploration of data cooperatives as scalable business models, highlighting the challenges and opportunities inherent in translating cooperative business models to the digital realm. 🌐💡 Our preliminary observations and considerations for practical data governance solutions are out! Read our new report here: https://lnkd.in/ekBmzADm 1️⃣ Cooperatives - existing and trusted models: At least 12% of the global population is a member of one of the 3 million cooperatives worldwide, which also represent about 10% of the world’s employed population, yet the data co-op model is still very much in its early days. 2️⃣ From theory to practice: Despite plenty of research and frameworks, there are still too few practical applications of data cooperatives. The focus must shift from theoretical discussions to building functional models that address real-world challenges like data valuation, monetization, and user incentives. 3️⃣ Reframing Data Valuation: Data’s worth lies in its context and collective applications, not as an isolated asset. Effective models require collective bargaining and trusted verification mechanisms to ensure data accuracy and maximize its impact. ⏭️ What’s next? Data co-op experiments must establish clear metrics for success, involve continuous community feedback, and prioritize transparency needs to be accompanied by collaboration across sectors, and supportive policy changes, especially at the local level. This spring, we’ll convene practitioners, technologists, and policymakers at Georgetown University with the goal to create a roadmap marking possible paths – and pitfalls – to applying cooperative models in a digital context and launch an Action Network to advance data agency and economic fairness. Data is crucial, but what truly matters is the impact behind the numbers. Over the coming week, we'll be sharing six slides that break down the numbers and highlights the progress we've made over the past two years. These figures represent more than just statistics—they reflect real people, services, lives touched, a community served, and so much more. We invite you to 1. Share this information and 2. Ask yourself how you too can be a part of this impact. #improvinglivestogether through #community #excellece and #integrity #joininoursuccesses #wecanallbeimpactful

Project objective: Engaging the youth to express their opinions on the U-Report platform. The U-Report initiative aims to influence policy-making through social data. Throughout this journey, three key pain points faced by the youth during the financial crisis were identified. Our approach involved selecting individuals who have experienced similar challenges. Their stories are central to the narrative we are highlighting. The objective is to create content that resonates with the difficulties faced by the youth, ultimately motivating them to actively participate. #YouthEngagement #PolicyInfluence #UReport #SocialData #FinancialCrisis #YouthEmpowerment
