🎃 Halloween Lesson: Be the “Golden Door” Everyone Wants to Visit 🎃 Every Halloween, there’s that one house that stands out – the one everyone talks about because it gives out the best treats. It’s the "Golden Door" on the block. The place everyone’s excited to go. As business leaders, we can learn from this: in a crowded market, you don’t want to be just another choice. You want to be the "Golden Door" – the business people seek out because what you offer is special and hard to ignore. Here’s how to become the "Golden Door": 1. Deliver “Treat-Worthy” Value: Give your customers something that makes choosing you feel like a win. Just like the house with the best candy, make your offer worth the visit. 2. Craft “Crowd-Magnet” Offers: The "Golden Door" doesn’t need to shout. The value speaks for itself. Build something so good that customers feel lucky they found you. 3. Stay Unforgettable: Like the house everyone talks about year after year, make your offer memorable. Solve real problems in a way that people want to share. As you create your next offer, ask yourself: Is this something that will make my business the "Golden Door"? What would a “Golden Door” offer look like for you? 🍬✨

👻 🏆 My family won the local Halloween Parade Costume Contest! 🏆👻 While it was a small local event, there was a panel of judges who scored us on different categories. To be honest, I was really surprised. Our costumes were NOT the best out there, and we didn’t design our costumes to win a contest; we created them out of our love for a movie. I’ve also been re-reading foundational leadership and performance psychology literature, and I realized why we won: 🎃 We wanted our costumes to simply be better than last year; winning wasn’t the goal. 🎃 We were deliberate about making our costumes complement each other, creating a coordinated family (team) look. 🎃 Our costumes were purposeful and played to our individual strengths and personalities. 🎃 We practiced our characters for a few weeks, watching videos to capture their personalities. 🎃 When we were judged, we leaned into our characters and gave it our absolute all. 🎃 Most importantly, we had fun! So, how does this translate into motivational theory that we can apply to our teams and professional lives? ✨ We embraced a growth mindset, focusing on improvement rather than an outcome. ✨ We centered on our team (family) and competed together, rather than taking an individualistic approach. ✨ We engaged in deliberate practice—purposeful efforts to improve our strengths and weaknesses. ✨ We worked hard, yet had a ton of fun doing it! Perhaps I’ve overanalyzed our Halloween accolades, but I couldn’t help considering why we won. I love winning, and I’m extremely competitive, but I’ve learned that to be the best you need to be passionate and have a love for what you are doing, as well as a mindset focused on motivation, practice, grit, and team cohesion—rather than just the outcome of winning. Back to finishing out the last day of the month, and work to win October. Happy Halloween and hope you get more treats than tricks Revenue Leaders! #performancepsychology #revenueleardership #competition

What/who are you being for Halloween? If you’re unsure, maybe you could “be more like Yoda," as we say at Petra Coach. Here’s why: He is very matter-of-fact: He gets to the point with no BS (even if his syntax is a little convoluted). That’s where we got our catch phrase, "No Try, Only Do." You can’t be tentative about what you say or what you plan to do. You need to be direct, set the goal confidently and then perform the actions promised. He’s positive and encouraging: He recognizes Luke’s potential to be a great Jedi Master, and he cultivates that by helping Luke train and giving him the guidance he needs to improve. He’s a great teacher: He doesn’t do everything for Luke, but lets Luke face challenges, make his own mistakes and learn from them. He’s a great role model: Luke comes to him as an insolent teenager who thinks everything should just come easy. However, Luke goes on to master his skills and become a selfless hero because Yoda set a good example of a Jedi Knight. Overall, he’s a great mentor, and I think all leaders can take notes from him – I certainly have. So let’s all be a little more like Yoda, this Halloween and beyond. 🎃 I just learned two things about Halloween: 1- Carving a pumpkin from the bottom rather than the top is more efficient and prevents your pumpkin top from sinking. 2- Using a power drill is super fun and very effective when carving constellations on said pumpkin. 💡 It’s easy to tackle recurring challenges with the same solutions, but you’ll get similar results. It can be enlightening, more effective and maybe even fun to tackle those challenges in a new way. ⬇ See comments for two ways to help your team start thinking differently about challenges. #creativity #lead #newideas #thoughtexperiment #halloween #pumpkins

Our Homans Associate Excellence Shoutout this week goes to Mike Gagner! Nomination: “There are not enough words to express how much of an invaluable resource Mike is. This goes for both Homans and our customers. He functions seamlessly as a team player on a day-to-day basis, whether being a role model to some or a trusted and reliable mentor to others. He consistently and perpetually goes above and beyond for anyone and everyone. Every day we operate under immense pressure in this fast-paced environment and through it all, Mike is constantly there to make sure we not only get the job done, but it gets done right! Thank you, Mike, for everything you do!” Fun facts about Mike: What is your favorite season? Winter. Love the chance to go out on the frozen ponds or backyard ice rink to skate with the family. What is your favorite Holiday and why? Halloween. Love to get out the decorations and work with my daughter on decorating the house for the season. What is the best thing that's ever happened to you? The birth of my kids. They keep me grounded every day and I look forward spending time with them and the activities that they do. What 1 item would you bring with you if you were stranded on an island? Bear Grylls. Just so I had a chance to make it off the island. What do you consider your core values? Accountability. I feel that in life you need to be accountable for the decisions that you make in both your personal and work life. Mistakes will happen but that is life, and you need to take the hit, fix it, move on, and learn from it. What is your favorite quote? "Chess is like real life. The game goes on until you lose the king., not the queen, not the knight. Pieces will fall but the game must go on. Never give up on yourself because you lost a piece. After all you are the most valuable piece on the board. You got this"

Hot Potato Band closed out Nuix #XLR8 with a great performance. I’m always looking for inspiration, so here are five lessons that the Hot Potato Band can teach a sales team: 1) The Power of the Pause - these guys worked deliberate and extended pauses into their act and it really helped draw in the audience and build anticipation. A great reminder to not rush the payoff. 2) Make it personal - their big number involved a little story about the band leader’s own loving mother not being a fan of big brass band music and the efforts his mates made to persuade her… and I’ll just say, it worked. 3) Show off - this team are experts in their craft and they embraced that. They didn’t ask the crowd for requests. They took charge, challenging us to met them at their level. They know a lot more about producing a great show than we do, and they weren’t shy about taking us on a journey. 4) Pass the ball - the front man fronted, but he made space for his band mates to take center stage. Sometimes it was a solo, sometimes it was a small joke that you had to be paying attention to catch. But it was a team effort and that trust, culture, and leadership. 5) Wear tight pants. Okay, maybe this is more appropriate for band leaders than sales teams, but… showmanship matters! Great job Hot Potato Band

“You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at once.” - Oprah Winfrey There are many many things we want to achieve in life. And there is nothing wrong about wanting to achieve many or even all of them. Sometimes, there is a “better” time for something to happen. Sometimes, the timing for something to happen just isn’t in our control. But, as much as we want it all, we cannot ignore the importance of prioritising and choosing when to have what. It’s really not quite a balance. It’s more a trade-off. Note to self: even if the full buffet is available, I don’t have to eat everything.
