Green Light for Electric Flying Taxis at the 2024 Olympics! The French Council of State “conseil d’état” has approved the trial of electric flying taxis during the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games (July 26 - September 8). This decision, although provisional and pending a hearing in the fall, marks a key step for futuristic urban mobility in France. Initially authorized by the Ministry of Transport in early July, this initiative includes the creation of a "helistation" on the Seine at Austerlitz, enabling the take-off and landing of these flying taxis. This is a world first in public air transport within a major capital! Service will be operated by Volocopter from downtown Paris Cité de la Mode et du Design However, the Paris City Council, which filed the lawsuit, criticizes this project. Despite this, the experiment is underway, promising to transform our way of moving and showcase French innovation to the world during this global event. Our last preprint is out "E-bikes and travel behavior change: systematic review of experimental studies with meta-analyses" https://lnkd.in/e_sn67Gt - Meta-analysis shows a 5km daily increase versus controls after acquiring an e-bike, representing a 26% rise in e-bike mode share. - E-bikes can replace other transport modes, notably cars. Meta-analysis finds a 2.4km daily decrease in car travel representing a 10% reduction in car mode share versus controls post-intervention. - Baseline travel behaviors influence modal shift, with e-bikes typically substituting the most prevalent travel mode in the baseline period before acquiring an e-bike. - The experimental literature is scarce and only consists of studies conducted in Northern Europe. A classic example of idea vs. innovation! It might be a nice idea to have a commute with "unmatched luxury". The concept visual in the video certainly looks like something straight from Star Trek ... But what does this thing actually do better than, say, a high-speed train? It still needs a rail (so it cannot go straight from point A to B); because it is tied down it can never go as fast as an airplane; the energy needed to lift this monster off the ground is probably considerably higher than powering a train; and I would imagine the downwind of the propellers is far worse to the environment below than the side wind of a train. Leaves the capacity: 3000 pax at any given time. Wow! Can you imagine how long it would take to fill this thing? Let alone the fact that you'd need to wait for departure until those 3000 pax have all gathered at the station. "Revolutionizing Urban Mobility"? I think not ... The Swiss rail provider SBB CFF FFS has trains connecting the biggest cities every half hour (and they are always on time Deutsche Bahn) and aims to increase it to one train every 15 minutes. Now, that's how you do urban mobility!

"#CityAirbus goes #Rio" This is post 5 in the Rio de Janeiro “trilogy”. (check links to previous posts for Rio route intro and #eVTOL performance & income data in comments)   About 2.5 years ago I published my first post on the Airbus #CityAirbus #NextGen. As the prototype had rollout a few weeks ago I spent some time calculating the NextGen’s performance data. It certainly fits for Rio de Janeiro sightseeing.   Nevertheless, calculating the NextGen is pretty demanding. I had to tweak my software to its limits in order to make it “understand” how the NextGen climbs and cruises with lift provided both by its wings *and* its 8 propellers.   As it turns out, the propellers provide roughly 25% lift in cruise and up to 50% in max. climb. That’s ... massive. Note based on the exactness of these figures, the following performance values can be up to 20% off (for better or worse).   And this is it, the CityAirbus NextGen’s performance, in Rio at 27.3°C.   1. Trip duration (37 km at max. take-off weight) 20 minutes in total (at an average 112 km/h), which is less than Volocopter VoloCity’s 26 min, but above the typical 15 min.   2. Total energy per trip 45 kWh, same as VoloCity, above the average 40 kWh.   3. Pax-mile energy 41 kWh/100km and pax, similar to the Lilium Jet, above the average 30 kWh/100 km and pax. 4. Battery State-of-Charge (#SoC) drop Drops by 36 %-points, similar to Lilium and Archer Midnight, lower than VoloCity’s 50%. 5. Battery dissipation A bit too high (6 MJ) ... without cooling the batteries will heat up by >10 K (Kelvin or °C). Although less than VoloCity and Midnight (13-15 K).   6. Reserves Even if the CityAirbus starts at a battery #SoC of just 80%, it will arrive back at base with enough reserves to either loiter for >30 minutes or continue for >50 km (to alternate helipad) or a combination of both.   7. Charging time Assuming a “mild” 2C charging, the #SoC should rise in 36% * 60 min / 2 = 11 min back to 80%. Quite okay.   8. Utilization With 5 min boarding, 20 min flight time, and deboarding & charging = 13 min the total cycle time is 5 + 20 + 13 = 38 min. That’s 540 / 38 = 14 flights/day. Plus 2-3 flights before 10:00 and after 19:00 means a max. of 16-17 flights/day. That’s similar to Midnight, VoloCity and Lilium – and roughly 60% of what a helicopter could achieve. 9. Max. daily income at 75% load factor (3 pax) That’s 16.5/day * 654 € = 10 791 €/day (other eVTOLs: 10-15 000 €/day)     Well – these values are not impressive... However, with 16 motors powering 8 propellers, the CityAirbus is the most fail-safe eVTOL. And – like VoloCity and AutoFlight’s Prosperity – this is a no-tilt-prop aircraft with very low mechanical complexity. And that counts.
