Today, I had the privilege of attending an inspiring Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion roundtable with Katherine Lord. Our discussions centered on attracting and retaining diverse talent, covering key topics such as: Disabilities: Emphasising the need for inclusive hiring practices and workplace accommodations. Women in Tech/Data/Finance: Strategies to support and advance. Diverse Interview Panels: Ensuring our interview processes reflect the diversity we seek in our teams. Apprenticeship schemes: capturing diverse talent early from students from schools’/collages and not just grads! Not everyone needs a degree to be successful. Dedicated D&I Leads: Essential for driving initiatives. Flexible Working: Adapting to varied employee needs. Leadership Programs: Not just for emerging leaders. I received an insightful question from a junior faculty member at The Wistar Institute: "How can I help?" If you're already asking this, you're on the right path. Here are some concrete actions you can take to promote inclusivity and equity: 1️⃣ Share Your Successes: Transparency around negotiation strategies, salaries, and resources (like startup packages) can help dismantle inequities. Sharing your experiences can guide and empower others, especially women and people of color. 2️⃣ Be Attentive in Meetings: If you notice someone being interrupted or their ideas overlooked, step in. Give credit where it's due and amplify the voices of those who may not be heard. This simple act of recognition can make a significant difference. 3️⃣ Recognize and Use Your Power: Regardless of your position, you have the power to support equity. Advocate for fair treatment and resource allocation. Join forces with others to address and rectify inequitable behaviors and practices.
