Do you work with, teach, support or parent a Gen Z or young person starting their career? Yes? Then I have written the blog for you. It's called "Five Things Gen Z Need To Be Doing On LinkedIn" - nice and simple. I genuinely believe LinkedIn is a missed opportunity for this generation who are just starting out on their careers, whether they are sixth formers, higher eds, apprentices or post grads. Thank you to Francesca Long - Head Of Training & Talent Development at The Faraday Institution, who kindly contributed to the blog. She has been working with their PhD researchers and shares some incredible insights from their LinkedIn activity. Higher Education Careers Professional / RCDP / Freelance Careers Writer / Podcaster / Co-Host of The #WeAreCareers Show
📰 A brief #TheWeekInCareers UPDATE! 📰 So, about this week's episode... I had absolutely intended to put out something of a bumper newsletter episode this week, encompassing a preview of the coming academic year, how the Labour government's developing policy vision in the UK might impact the career development sector and the trends that CDPs need to be cognisant of as many of us enter the summer break, buuuuuuuut.... ...what can I say, events conspired! (and by events, I mean the usual dash to tidy up project work before going on holiday, PLUS the Olympics coverage and the return of the elusive British Summer!) 😅 While undertaking my research/prep for this week's newsletter, I also realised that one edition of #TheWeekInCareers was barely sufficient to tackle a preview of the academic year ahead, with everything from the upcoming launch of Gatsby 2.0, reflections from Results Day 2024, the developing AI x Careers landscape and much more on the table for reflection and analysis. With this in mind, I'll be dropping a 'Futuregazing' double-header of the newsletter on Friday 23rd and Friday 30th August respectively - keep your eyes peeled for the drop in your LinkedIn/email inbox and please let me know in the meantime if there are any particular topics you'd be most keen to read about in these issues! 🤳 Have a great summer and see you in the #Careersphere in a few weeks' time! 👋 #TheWeekInCareers #News #Careers #Futuregazing #ComingSoon

Wonderful morning at Bright Network's annual research breakfast exploring what graduates want! One thing that always surprises me is the difference between skills valued most by students vs employers. Here are 3 skills that stood out to me: 🦾🦾 Resilience - As a recruiter, I look for students and graduates who are not afraid to go after what they are interested in and don't let setbacks hold them back. Whether it means continuing to apply for roles in their desired industry or proving naysayers wrong, resilience is key. 👩💻👨💻Industry experience - Contrary to popular belief, existing industry experience is not always required to gain future industry experience. There are many ways to build tangible industry interest, such as attending discovery days, taking online courses, and listening to podcasts. ✨✨ Passion for the Business - This skill is rated number 1 for employers and number 3 for students. But what does it mean? Show us you know who we are and what we do. Research the history of our business, our key clients, and our competitors. Interviewers want to see that you have a genuine interest in building a career with us. 📢📢If you are a student/graduate or graduate employer let me know your thoughts! #BrightNetworkResearch #EarlyCareers

🎙️New interview alert! Lorraine Godden, PhD Godden recently discussed the importance of early career-related learning in grades 4-6 on iHeartRadio Newstalk Tonight! 📚 In her insightful interview, Dr. Godden explores how young students perceive the word "career" and why it's crucial to broaden their understanding beyond visible jobs. Dr. Godden shares: "Career is actually rooted in the Latin word "carus" which refers to a chariot or cart, a means of travel and journeying. Those of us that work in the career field, understand career to be about life, learning AND work. So, work and jobs are a component of career but they're not everything." Tune in at 30:44 to hear the full interview and gain valuable insights on how early career education can better prepare children for future decisions. 🚀 🔗 Listen to the interview and read the full publication here: ceric.ca/possibilities

This survey was carried out in December 2023, by on behalf of BBC Bitesize Careers as part of their offering for National Careers Week - and whilst I have shared it before, I thought it was due another airing on my Linkedin feed as it contains POSITIVE NEWS! 'Engineer' comes second on the Top 10 Jobs for Teenagers, one step behind 'Doctor', which has to be good news for the UK Transport Industry ... although we should always keep front of mind that we are in competition with many other industry sectors which need engineers too of course. I remember a conversation with an Executive at BT some years' ago, and she was telling me that they had a shortfall of 50,000 engineers on the horizon ... I have to say that I was surprised to see the No.1 'preferred employer' ... but perhaps that reflects the fact that 'feeling good about what they do' is No.2 on a list of what's important about the job they do. 'Happiness' is at No.1 and 'money' at No.3 - which is definitely reflective of what our Talent Team have seen at the more senior end of the career spectrum over the past 3 years' too ... candidates are prepared to consider a lower salary or sideways move, if the role they are moving to offers them a better work life balance, and/or a greater sense of purpose. There are some interesting geographic differences between the 'North & South' here though ... which perhaps reflects the cost of living in London, but I'm open to hearing your thoughts on what other factors might be influencing this? 19% of teenagers would consider an apprenticeship; some work required here to improve engagement with schools I feel, and for this engagement to start at an earlier point - as an increase in apprenticeships would bring huge value to the UK economy and society if the Government took it seriously enough. #apprenticeships #careerchoice #futureleaders https://lnkd.in/e5fSMYH9

As I neared the end of my school journey, I was faced with mix emotions that come with graduating . It's exciting to think about bidding farewell to those early morning classes, but it's also daunting to face the uncertainties of the working world. I'll admit, during my final year, I was unsure about which career path to pursue. Whenever someone asked, I'd give a vague answer just to seem like I had it all figured out. But truth be told, I was clueless! 😂 One particular moment in my last Development Communication EUNICE ASANTEWAA ANKOMAH, MCIPR, CDFP was invited to speak to us .She shared her career journey, highlighting the abundance of opportunities in Public Relations. Her words truly inspired me, and I may have shed a tear or two because it was great to see someone striving in that field. After class, I mustered the courage to approach her for advice on my next steps. She offered valuable guidance that helped me tremendously. I later got an internship at an agency and learned a lot about public relations, like editorial writing, thought leadership articles and strategic communications. I went from being clueless about my future to writing my first article! I'm grateful to everyone who helped me. If you are like me and unsure about your next step, just ask for help and put yourself out there. Focus on gaining experience and exposure – that's your ticket to more opportunities! #Graduate #PublicRelations #womeninpr
